The Duck Thread

Really? I don't have any crumbles, though, just pellets. The Naturally Peck is mash, I think? I'm not certain. I just know it's not pellets and it's not crumbles lol.

Now that we are getting an egg a day, it suddenly dawned on me that I don't know what to do with them, lol. Are duck eggs porous like chicken eggs? Do you wash them or not? Is it ok to keep them on the counter at room temperature or do you refrigerate them? Thanks y'all

I usually don't wash mine till right before I use them or am giving them away. I've never kept any of my eggs on the counter so not sure how long they can stay out. I don't think they are as porous as chicken eggs. I steam most of our ducks eggs for the dogs. and give some away and bake with them my dh doesn't care for duck eggs

Wow, thanks for all the info everybody! Great pics too. Sorry you lost some to bobcats! Poor little guys. 'Tis the life of a bird owner, I guess. We are going to go pick up another duckling for company for him. Should we do another Mallard? Also, it won't matter if it is male or female, will it? Because we don't know the sex of the little one. I am kind of interested in adding a Khaki Campbell as they have good egg production.

I have 5 blue runner ducks. I believe that they are 4/5 weeks old. I know for sure that one of them is female. But as they get older im thinking that the other 4 are all male but not 100% sure. If they are all male with only one female can I keep them all?

I keep the duck eggs on the counter and don't wash them until I use them. If I wash for customers or because they are filthy then they go in the fridge. Duck eggs have a thicker shell and membrane so they keep better than chicken eggs.

We love duck eggs! They make scrumptious scrambled eggs that are thick and "creamy". We use them for everything. Just don't over cook them if frying or they get slightly rubbery.

Stupid phone... I hate trying to type on this thing, but the kids are hogging the computer.

So... keep the mash FF at a pudding consistency and try to strain just a little when feeding. We used some homemade sauerkraut juice for the starter and got a great ferment going.
