I'd say if he's eating then he has a good chance as long as your willing to work with him, usually if they are going out they will stop eating. I thought with him having such a wound on top of his head he may be crested, sometimes they will get picked on because of the feathers sticking up on top and alot of times ducks will get head wounds from being over mated by drakes. Okay what kind of quack do you hear. loud quacking or raspy sounds like he has a cold in his nose. Is the wound on it's head closed up? and maybe the chest wound is itching is the reson he's messing with it. if you cut the feahters away from the wound you be able to treat it better and apply some kind of topical wound ointment but not anything that has pain medication in it. Can he walk now?I have no idea if he's crested. The other two ducks he was with don't have crests. I'm not sure if it's a drake or a duck. How do I tell the difference? We have cattle, so I have betadine and epsom salt water. I'll use some cream on him as well. As far as his feed, he eats the fire out of it. I mix it all together really well and he scoops it up like he hasn't eaten in years.
I just don't know at what point it's "too bad", you know? I've never dealt with this.
Yeah, he eats great. The quack he has is deep and loud. Not raspy in the slightest. The wound is closed up, and kind of peeling. I've cut the feathers away now and applied a topical ointment.I'd say if he's eating then he has a good chance as long as your willing to work with him, usually if they are going out they will stop eating. Sounds like you could have an over bred female especially with the wound on her head. do you know if she had any crested Pekins? just looking at her head makes me think she may have been crested. I'd start giving this duck either some plain niacin- or Bcomplex or Brewers yeast I think it does have a vitamin deficiency and it's usually the B's especially niacin. which can usually be fixed if given either in their water which would be the [niacin or B complex mixed into a 1 gal of water 200 meg of niacin] or Brewers yeast sprinkled over his feed 1Tab to 1 cup of feed. daily till you see improvement and then cutting back to a couple times a day till he has been symptom free for a couple weeks. You said your giving a drop of multi vit. what is it an animal of human grade and does it have the b's and niacin in it. Do you have chickens? if so please give the duck along with the vitamin supplement some chicken feed added to what you are now feeding. Another way to tell duck from drake is the drake will get a curled feather at the base of it's tail when they become mature. Please keep us updated.Yeah, he eats great. His walking is weird. He'll walk one or two steps and then fall forward onto his chest/face. He (she?) can flap her wings, but the duck only walks a few feet and then falls forward (Why, originally, I thought it had ricketts). Thanks for the help, Miss Lydia!![]()
My duck doesn't really sound that loud. She (I'm guessing - no curled feathers) makes lots of squeal-like sounds when you come around, and then follows up with some deeper quacks like the one at the end of that youtube video that the smaller duck is making.
I am going to town today (I live on a large farm about a half hour from the nearest store) and I'll get some brewers yeast. Can I find that at the grocery store, or should I go to a health food store, or Tractor Supply for it? I'll also get the duck some regular duck food.
The vitamin I am giving her is a human vitamin - liquid. I pierce the capsule and put 1-2 drops in per a whole bowl of food.
Who's going to get the extra female? lol yes that's a fine ratioIf I have seven females is two Males going to be ok? Is 2 to 7 a good enough ratio
