The Duck Thread

Yes, they have fresh feed and water 24/7. I am unsure of their age, but I would say maybe around 3 or 4 weeks? They have been doing this ever since we got them 2 weeks ago and I solved the problem for a while by putting them in an old bird cage but they outgrew it so I had to move them back.

Do you think they are actually eating it? Rather than mouthing it? Ducks can be curious and mouth everything but are not actually eating.
As for your water, you can put the waterer into a larger container with bedding, that way it's just staying wet in one place. Search the forum there's a few good pics of that setup on here

I am pretty sure they are eating the pine bedding and they were for sure eating the paper towels. They were just chewing on the regular towels but then a string came loose and one of them started to swallow it and i had to pull it out of their throat... I did use a container for their waterer but then I got a larger one because they drank it too fast. What type of container can I put it in so the water won't get all over?

Oh my, she is a lovely girl.

My 2 pekin ducklings won't stop trying to eat anything they can possibly find. They ate their pine shavings, so I tried putting old towels, but then they were tearing strings off of them and trying to eat them. Then I tried using paper towels and they ate those too! I even tried laying down newspaper but that didn't work because it didn't soak up the water and they still tried eating it. Whenever I let them out of the brooder they run around on the floor and pick up anything they can find. One of them tried eating a cough drop!

What can I use for bedding that will still soak up the water they spill and they won't eat it? Thanks.

I know this isn't supposed to be funny, but it made me giggle. Mini goats! I'm not sure that the pine shavings will hurt them. Mine have had pine shavings for weeks, and they're fine. My chickens eat them all the time, too. My ducklings are now on mixed bedding bedding of pine shavings, alfalfa, and straw that they had root through. I may try one of those water dishes that hang from the side of the cage for a bit to keep them from swimming in it.

Are they actually eating the shavings, or just playing with them? Mine will pick them up and "chew" on them for a bit, but they always spit them out. Almost always. They like the red pieces.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/927431/pine-pellets-and-water-container-question something like this only on a smaller scale. grill pan bottom has sides and can hold a pot with water.[like the grill pans that are used in an oven]
Ducks just like to nibble they don't have hands to feel so they use their bills, I usually wait on shaving till mine are at least a week old and eating good so they know the difference.

Just make sure they don't run out of food and water because at they age they are they are hungry all the time.
