The Duck Thread

he fallows me around and of I am not in the room he flips out.
Of course it does, ducklings especially ones that were hatched with many others are already imprinted on their sibs and mama duck. so you are next best thing. They really need companionship that is the reason it is flipping out when you leave and it can't see you. I hope you'll really consider getting in touch with a wild bird rehabber for the sake of the duckling. If you try to raise it and then think you can go and release it it will probably end up dead because it hasn't had it's mama to teach it how to find food. People who know how to help wild waterfowl live to be released know what they are doing. I the mean time give it a mirror that hasn't got sharp edgers so it can see itself and a stuffed animal to cuddle with and do you know ducklings need to be kept warm and not put into cold water, they can chill and die. Did you look at the thread I gave you?

He is way bigger then her so i dont think he could ahve twisted to have tried fetilization
I'm not even talking about having bred her I am talking about grabbing her for 10 mins and scaring the life out of her stressing her out, you cannot have ducklings in with hormonal drakes period. Didn't you say she was screaming what did that tell you?

What do you use to coat your floor?
Bring your camera when you go egg hunting.. I would love to see black/olive egg's from your duck's.. We sold the pair of duck's to our neighbors.. They are Cayuga's, her egg's are cream colored.. We almost kept them just for their egg color.. Glad we didn't.. What breed is it that you have that lay the black/olive egg's.? What preditors do you have around your area??

those are there grand mums eggs! It's the Cayuga x Swedish blues giving me those colors. Lola is call x pekin. The white ones are Lolas. Well My area of Maine is farm country... So red and silver fox, skunk, coon, weasel/mink, coyotes, random bear, blue jays, owls, hawks, crows..... Luckily for me... I also have Canadian geese residing and 4 dogs(useless couch hogs!) the worst have been the skunks.

Oh boy you do have a ton of preditor's.. Do you have chickens.. And do the geese stay all year?

Ok.I have 2 ducklings,2 months old.I have officialy added them to the flock.I have one drake and i'm pretty for sure this duckling (The pekin) is our 2nd drake. My oldest drake (A large pekin),had been in the run chasing my lil Cutie (Our 2 month old runner duckling) all around the run.He grabbed her by her head and had her like that for  a good 7 maybe 10 minutes just trying to mate with her.I just watched thinking it was mating, but of course I did try threw the fence to shew him off.She was screaming.
Question:Why would he want ANYTHING to do with a hen that doesn't eve lay eggs?I'm upset because 1.She is muddy and I had to let them out at 6 something to take baths when the birds of prey are out in this area. Also, she is soooooooooooooooooo sweet, that I could just KILL Sparta (The drake).

You really need to be right there durring the first few meeting's.. Duck's can be mean.. But just so i understand you have 4 duck's? 2 different ages, right? Plus how much space.. Can you integrate them between a fence, so they can not reach threw? If you have to many drakes then yes it might be time to get rid of him, but honestly, you probably introduced them to soon, and would need to interven as soon as he goes after her, or any other's..
You are dealing with 2 different flock's.. It will take time.. Photos of your set up? & brat's??

X2 from all I have heard it is really hard to get a wood duck duckling to eat they don't eat chick feed like other ducks they are I am pretty sure insects eaters. contacting a wild life rehabber is dif the best option.

He thinks you are his mate/mom.. Duck's are suppose to be in a flock, more than 1.. 3-4 s best.. We really need one more female for our flock, just have not found the right one.. Get a rubber duckie for him till you get more or take to a sanctuary.. Photo's??

Also,will this kill her?

Yes, She could try to get away & break her neck.. You have seen the thrash the greens in the pool.. They can bite hard.. Our drake Rick GET'S a hold go my skin, bite's and twist's.. I have a homemade screen I put him in while I'm out watering or cleaning.. He won't leave me alone.. My friends & neighbors think it is cute.. But my arm's look like I have been beat up with bruises.. So in he goes.. Plus during mating season he will stay in for part of the day to give Lauren a break.. Her neck feather are tore up... I put the broiling pan in full of water with greens for him to eat..
