The Duck Thread

Hi everyone how's it going? I am set up for some new family members on the ranch and was wandering what kind of duck to go with. I am looking for friendly and pretty. They also have a large coop and I am hoping they will be able to rome the yard so they can fallow us around and be part of the family.

. I have Cayugas and I absolutely adore them. I don't have to clip their wings they catch a little air but won't go over my fence. My duck started laying and three weeks ended up with 20 eggs and she is still going strong. They are not super loud either

Hey @DoctorWhoDucks!! First let me say, LOVE YOUR NAME! My 4th grader has 2 WHs and is a huge Doctor fan. Her bday cake was a fez and she has galaxy high tops with a tardis on them! I'll PM you a pic since it's not exactly a ducky topic. Lol. You asked about your welshies being standoffish. I've been a BIT (cough cough) hard on our 2 (Tater and Tot) for being a-holes to my neighbor's ducklings,Tot is Tot the Snot and the drakeling Tater is a bit derpy. I think I'm unfair to them. If I could upload the video from my phone (open to suggestions!) I'd show them walking across a plank for my daughter. Literally. Tater is actually very sweet and Tot is well, like most other ducks in the world! Lol. I can't decide if she's really smart or Tater just makes her look smart.

We (ok, I, cuz I was hoping to steal their loyalty... Nope) handled them quite a lot as bitty babies. I pestered Tater because of his turned in foot, panting in the hot brooder and anything else I could over react to. Tater just took it in stride. Tot got to the point of standing over him or between me and him every time I came around. He actually likes me but she scolds him whenever he's friendly. They have no intentions of being picked up or petted, but he gives in if any of us can catch him. Tot? Not happening! But here's the thing, they will sit at my feet and chew on my shoelaces! They PANIC when they realize they can't see their people. I scold them for going to start a rumble with the neighbor's ducklings AND THEY LISTEN! (NO backing down to a good fight in these 2!) They have no intentions of being lovey dovey with any of us, but then, I'm not sure they even like each other. They ARE at our feet all the time. When you read about laid back ducks that hang out in people's pockets, on their laps, etc., don't assume there's something wrong with your ducks who act like ducks. They are just being normal ducks. Don't lose heart. Feed them treats that aren't junk food or too big for their little mouths, and keep loving on them while their too little to escape your clutches! Lol. I always let Tater down when he felt like he had enough. Tot never liked being picked up. If I laid down in the grass right now, they'd climb all over me and preen me to death. If they even see us at the glass door, you can hear them a mile away. Everybody's right when they say treats treats treats! Do what I couldn't, deep breath, handle them according to what their individual personalities allow and always have green peas on your person! Lol.

We will skip the awkward teen phase and go straight to the pre-molting phase.

My neighbor's ducks are the kind that you can pick up and pet. Unfortunately, one of them couldn't quite figure out that people aren't mating material. A little distance is ok.

@suzy4027thanks :) my ducks names are Amy, Clara, River, and Rose lol and Clara seems to be the only one that doesn't just have a meltdown if I try to touch her lol she is the biggest out of the four tho.

Hi Desiree210. Thanks for the reply. It looks like you have some happy ducks. I like the fact you don't have to clip their wings because I don't want to have to offend them like that lol. I haven't done a lot of research on breeds of ducks because I would like to adopt. In a perfect world a nice friendly duck and a pretty duck would be good.
