My husband says my father in law found a newly hatched duckling dead inside the water plate this morning.

i don't know what the heck happened. The water plate is not at all deep and I saw the other two ducklings splashing about and getting out easily and comfortably from it.

Rambo's down to just 2 eggs and her two ducklings.

What could have happened?

i had a duck drown, it was almost a month old, the other 2 got out fine, but i found it floating...

Possible hypothermia or most likely an underlying issue if mama wasn't trying to encourage her out. My mallards where in the water at a day and half with mama always pushing them around, in or out of the water. Hoping for the best with the other two eggs.

Last night my husband found one of the older ducklings dead and injured as if attacked.

Only Rambo and babies are in there so he started inspecting the coop and found a hole on the floor under the hay.

Stupid giant rat probably found her way back in and killed the ducklings just like tje first. I'm so sad
The hole was patched up but now it's only one duckling amd two eggs.

I wish I could go out there myself but I just had my own little duckling (3 month old baby boy) and there are too many mosquitoes to take him out there, so I'm just getting updates from my hubby and father in law.

I'm just getting a new coop built for the new ducklings and chickies, no more of this "found a new hole in the coop" sadness.

Lol, it'll mean half WH/ half pekin babies. I have no female welshies at the moment, unfortunately, and I can't find any eggs to hatch myself some! I think I'll just have to place another order with Holderread's to get some next spring.

Oh! Picture that cross...they'd be adorable!! Yes, yes, give her duck eggs! I'm planning on getting Welshies this Spring, too. I have to get ducklings...not ready to even try hatching.

Well I guess the pekin is going to try to hatch again too This is ridiculous, lol. I guess life is just so good over here everyone thinks more babies should enjoy it, because now I have two broody hens, a broody goose, and a broody pekin! Two days ago I had one broody hen and that was it. So I took two of the pekin's eggs and gave them to Lacie, and let Sugar keep the rest. She's also got a couple chicken eggs in the nest that I'm going to have to take soon.

Oh, and I apparently have two more pekins now. At the feeder today were a male and female pekin that I didn't have before. They were eating like they were starved. I think they possibly came from my neighbor who does not have the best track record as far as proper poultry care goes. At least I know their flock is clean of diseases. We'll see if they stick around.
