The Duck Thread

I am getting ready to purchase the supplies that I will need for new ducklings, which I will get in May. I see there are heat lamps in 125 and 250 watt, red and clear. Which is better. They will be in a box when I first get them, for at least a week or so. I also read somewhere that you couldn't use cedar shavings under their feet. Is pine ok? Or is there something better. I'm a newbie at this, don't have a clue what I am doing. But want to give them the best chance I can for them to make it. Trying NOT to do something stupid! LOL

What about the ceramic heater emitter infrared lamp bulb, would they be better? I see them used for reptiles. But not sure about chicks/ducklings.

Thanks in advance!

125 or 250 watt depends on where the brooder is to keep the brooder the correct temp(90-95 first week the 5 degrees less every week till matches outside temp or fully feathered)....i tend to use the 250 red brooder light as thats what i need. pine shavings is fine....its what i use for both ducklings and chicks.

and ducks are super messy so you'll be changing shavings quite a bit

I've always gone with red bulbs, due to it lessening picking with chicks, and it seems to be better about not being as bright for nighttime... I use 250, but have a dimmer switch plugged into mine, makes it easy to lower temp as needed...

Pine shavings are ok, just get the large flake not the fine shavings... that lessens the danger of them eating them and getting blocked up...

I've heard the ceramic ones are better as they don't produce light, but they also don't emit heat as far out as a regular heat bulb... maybe someone else knows more on those, but hope this helps...

Also, very glad you are planning ahead... :thumbsup

I had ordered 2 types of ceramic emitter infrared lamp bulbs, 100 watt that are used for reptiles, do not like them, maybe
the higher watts are better but was very disappointed so went to the 150 heat bulb because I had one on hand.

Premier 1 brooder plate all the way. I will never ever use infrared bulbs or ceramics again.

Thanks everyone. We buried Waffles under a tree today, which was no easy task with the ground frozen solid and snow covered. I'll miss her lots, but I think Potato will miss her more. He has 12 other ducks to socialize with, but he never cared much for them. He just loved his Waffles. I hope he can become ther close with another duck someday.

I'm so sorry! Waffles is a great name though. Potato is like my Sam, she had a friend named Bob Johnson Chevrolet (don't ask) but when he died she never really "clicked" with any other duck for along time. She has finally made a friend in Freddie, one of my rouens
