The Duck Thread

Curious question: does anyone else's flock divide into sub groups by themselves? My younger ducks all seem to have formed their own group and hang out together. The two mallard girls and the four mutts have no problem mingling with the other seven older ducks (although they're not that much older, only about 6-7 months older), but they always seem to separate again and pal around. They are also my rebels. When I herd the ducks in their pen, the older ones have no problem filing in, but the rebels want to stay outside and put up a fight. They are all mallard or half mallard, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Just an interesting observation :)

Yup, microflocks! You know, like high school. Popular ducks, quiet ducks, rebel ducks, jock ducks....

HA! I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one with a rebel and it's always 1 of my Rouen girls. "Nope, not today, mom...come chase me!" Meanwhile, the group that went into the coop are coming out wondering what's up.

Odd ducks, smart ducks, designer ducks, loner ducks...

Yes, my ducks seperate by breeds. The khakis hang out by the pool most of the time, while the runners hang out in the yard or with me.

My flock separates by age - My original two ducks (Tella & Ettie) go off on their own together and My two youngest (Noir & Mystique) go off on their own together. It separates by breed sometimes (Runners and Swedish separate off). When Kaine's hormones are down, the boys sometimes separate off and hang together away from the girls. And special friends separate off - Rhiannon & Tevye. Most of the time most of the ducks are together as a flock.

Omg yes! I get half the flock in and when I go chase the second half, the first half sees the door open and come out like hey nice of you to leave this door open for us. Drives me nuts lol

And, their favorite time to do this, of course, is when it's pouring down rain or positively frigid & windy outside.

Edit to add...I can just imagine what I look like chasing the goofballs. Mark keeps threatening to get video of it.

There is something very humbling about herding ducks.
I guess my ducks need some more treats. I am disappointed if they don't put themselves in. Then when they don't, I go out and they huddle by the door of the house and when I open the door, they run right in.

Of course that will change early April when they get their big pool.
