The Duck Thread

Sad day today. My husband is out culling two of the male mutt ducks we raised. I can't watch so I am just staying inside. But I know it has to be done. Five males to eight females is just too much. That will leave us with three drakes, which is still high, but the WH male has virtually no urge to mate. So I am hoping this ratio works out.
It is hard but your taking care of your females and that is important.

Yea, knowing that makes it a little easier. He ended up only culling one for now, Frankenduck. We made the decision after witnessing him mount one of our runner girls. He was the size of a pekin and squashed her flat to the ground, and yanked on her neck very roughly. It had to be done. But it sucks because that's one less duck I have that will eat from my hand. He was the most people friendly of my mutts. I need to stop naming them before I know if they are boy or girl.

Looking to the future, is there someone/somewhere you could learn how to sex day olds?

I wish I could learn how. We are the only people around our area that have ducks that I know of. And I don't know of any hatcheries in northwest Ohio. I could try learning from videos, but I'm not willing to take the risk of hurting them for the sake of learning. It certainly would be useful though.

Try contacting your local warden service or local agricultural extension...or even a waterfowl rescue....
