I am so upset.
Three days ago I had to make the call to move the boys to the garden to protect the girls. Pogo was beating up on little duck really badly during breeding. We were in the process of building a drake pen at my FIL's house but had a couple steps left before they could go in it. Figuring it would only be a few days we put them in our garden, it is not covered but it was that or risk them killing the girls. I figured the risk of a predator coming in under a week was low, we had had no issues so far and the muscovies often refused to come inside over night when we still had them. Wrong. We lost our beloved Pogo last night. I'm so mad at myself for putting him in the garden but I really didn't have a choice. We figure it was an owl, as Louie lost his mind at 4pm tonight when an owl started calling and he never reacted to it before. The pen was complete and they were going to move there today.Nothing makes you feel like a bad duck parent worse than having had to make an emergency decision to save your ducks only to have it backfire and lose one.
Welcome back! That's great they all get along! You do know that your CX chicken probably won't have a very long life right?
They look like they're having fun!
Thanks for responding. These are 10 month old Pekins. They have been laying 1 egg a day each since December. I clean out the nest boxes completely each morning. Their coop is 4'x8' . I put them up at 6:30pm and let them out at 6:30am. I will have to watch alittle longer.
Thanks. Linda
I have 3 Peking females & one male and I only got one egg a day when it was just one female & no males but once I added the other 2 females & the male I started getting 6 eggs a day...most days! Occasionally there's 4-5 & now that I have one of the females setting, I'm bk down to getting 1-2 eggs a day! I'm not sure if they r laying in her nest tho because she will NOT let me look! She has an evil eye! Lol!
Maybe they just lay extra when they're getting ready to set...it's a thought!
Yes I do know that about my CX! I didn't find out she was a CX until shortly after she had started laying eggs! At that time I was told they rarely live long enuf to lay eggs and that it was even more rare for them to live past their first birthday! So far she has done both! She struggles sometimes but she gets her cardio in with plenty of exercise...I check on her everyday to make sure she's ok! She didn't like the cold over the winter much & I worried she wouldn't make it thru the winter but she has come out on the other side and she is loving the warmer weather so for as long as she keeps on tickin, I'm gonna keep on loving her & if she seems to be getting too bad off, I will not let her suffer!
Just keep an eye on her. She will probably be fine. Our dogs eat all sorts of stuff (chicken, duck, geese, wild bird) and on occasion and toss it right back up. It will pass. But, watch her. Let her eat some grass if she wants to...that seems to clean out their system. If it keeps up though you might call your vet just to make sure.HELP!!! my dog ate a bunch of the ducks stuff and is throwing up every where! Has any one experienced this! she ate pine shavings that the ducks pooped in, duck food, and grass. Gave her pumpkin last night and she threw all that up too
