The Duck Thread

Hello - my baby girls are about 6.5 weeks old and we have been feeding them flockraiser crumbles with extra niacin. When should we move them to a regular feed and when should we start on a laying mash? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Start them on laying mash as soon as you get your first egg! Good luck!

Flockraiser or an all flock feed is fine for all stages of life, really... once they start laying you can switch them over to layer then or offer free choice oyster shell on the side if they'll regulate their calcium themselves... if not, then layer might be better choice... keep up the Niacin until about 10 weeks old... :)

Exactly!

Mine won't really eat corn either... some just don't care for it... try soaking some wheat or slightly sprout it... mine adore that!
Your ducks are so cute- Awe. That's good to know that my ducks aren't the only ones! I thought maybe I wasn't trying hard enough to get them to eat it. I haven't thought of the sprouted grain idea. They digest that ok?

My duck has what I believe to be bumblefoot... I soaked her in some Epsom salt and warm water and wrapped it up in plastic (a ducks life in our area right now is wet, cold, and icy). I unwrapped it today to apply some antibiotic cream, and I noticed that it's very warm and it smells like a mixture of wet dog and sweat

What's up with that? Her foot is getting more and more swollen...

Don't wrap just soak and put on the antibiotic cream and keep her in as clean a place as possible.

Infection might be spreading you may want to start her on an antibiotic by mouth.
