I could never put poison meat out I have 4 dogs, three little ones and a old German Shepard. I'm sure the coons would get it before the fox anyway that's what always happens while I'm trying to catch the ground squirrels the darn mice eat all the corn before the squirrels go in it. When I finally got the squirrel it flipped the trap and opened it up.
I have heard fox is very hard to catch in a trap with my luck I wouldn't catch him. Then there's the cost of the large live trap those thing are expensive! I have a coon size one but this guy is pretty big, I'm sure he wouldn't go in that. My wildlife rescue friend said she would send me the info on a lady who traps and relocates them but I'm willing to bet that won't be cheap. And then what, another one just comes along. I'm thinking the money would be better in the long run going towards a electric poultry fence. Loosing 1to3 a year would be heart breaking for me that would be most of my LF flock. And I know I've said it before but I love my chickens they run to me and I can pet some of them. I'm thinking the fence would be a good piece of mind. At least it will give them a better chance.
well, I hope you solve your problem! I would fence mine, but my extra money goes toward other things. And trust me, I love mine too. They are trained to go we're I point, come when I call and most of them enjoy some lap or shoulder time. If you do fence, stake the bottom down with tent spikes, or else the fox will go underit. Good luck! :)

And foxes ont go in live traps of any size, trust me I've tried! And coons will pull the chickens heads off (I've had issues with this... Coons are rare in my area thanks to me) . They are about the only common predator that kills for th sake of killing.

I got the nice breeder lady to send me a pic of my little blue girls papa! He has a lot of the same features as my roo. Unfortunately theres too many ee or ameruacana hens that she has to know the mama....But is he a true ameruacana?

He looks similar to my roo. Mine just attacked me (again

-caught him up and held him upside down so he'll avoid me for a while) so I'm debating about making soup out of him and raising one of his sons (I'm assuming I've got a boy out of the 6 chicks I hatched out a couple of weeks ago) to be the next head of the flock. The male chick's biological mother will still be around (too much inbreeding?) but at least she can have a chance to grow her feathers back because the EE roo loves the EE hen. I could also try another hatching of EE eggs after the d'uccles hatch in 2 more weeks and see what I get. One thing I have to figure out is what to do for a brooder (both for the ones in incubator and anyothers I decide to hatch). The 6 babies I have now are being raised by broody hen, my temporary housing is being used by polish bantam chicks and I don't want to put them into the d'uccles yet until they are big enough to keep from being bullied.

While I had him up close and personal, I took photos of his comb because I don't know what it's mixed with but thought it kind of looked unique.

This is a photo of the Fox that approached me in my front yard. I'm sure it had eaten something poisoned according to Animal Control, they put her down the next day they say she was probably poisoned. They said they've had a huge number of Domestic and Wild life dying from Gopher poisons etc that people aren't putting out correctly in their yards. She was beautiful...she laid down in front of me, very hot day...we shaded her for 1 1/2hrs until Animal Control showed up, then when they tried to catch her she suddenly gained her energy and bolted, but they got her in the loop. That's why she's standing up in the truck. I didn't even know we had Fox here where we live. I've lost Chickens to Coyotes, but maybe I've lost to the Fox also and never knew it. I had hoped they would take her to the Wild Life Rescue, but they said the "funds" aren't there to save her. Good luck with your chickens, I still think they are happier roaming than being all cooped up. It's the risk we take.

Thank you, I can stake the electric netting down? It won't short it out? It has to be plastic right?
That's great your chickens go where you point!

She was beautiful, very sad they couldn't save her and relocate. Poison is awful way to go.

I have two silkies. Which are great broodies. My patridge silkie is currently broody and is sitting on some eggs right now that are due to hatch this weekend! This will be my first hatch as well as hers. Ive candeled last at day 15and all were alive and moving. I have two wheaten maran, two EE, three lavender orpington, and one barnyard mix that she is sitting on. I plan on getting an incubator however. But i heard broodies are better than incubator...makes sense.
