The EE braggers thread!!!

I've got 4 Easter Eggers, with 2 I raised from 1 day old born 3/2/15 and 2 that I got later on as 'almost laying' at 6 months. One of the ones I raised still has yet to lay anything. The other was the second to lay, but stopped about a month ago and is apparently molting. The other two started about 7 months old, and I give everyone flock raiser crumbles and layer feed pellets mixed together, with oyster on the side if they want it. I bought layer feed when I got the 2 older ones, then realized that the others didn't need it and got flock for everyone, and just mix it so they can get what they want out.

I assume my freeloader will start up in the spring, but at least she's my most puppy-like one, always running up and talking to me as soon as she sees me.

I've found the Easter Eggers need that 20% protein content feed to maintain a good production rate. All the pullets I've raised usually start laying between 5 to 6 months. I gave a friend who feeds a 16% grower feed to her flock, a couple chicks and hers didn't start laying till they were 8 months old. Her sisters (full siblings, I own the parent birds) were laying months earlier.
They can be very good producers, but they need a higher protein feed.

Interesting observation. I will say I haven't noticed an significant difference in my flock despite feeding a 20% ration to all birds including EEs. They seem to lay late anyhow. Then again I have enough birds that's it hard to be sure who's laying what and when.
