I got Very lucky since I got them by buying a box of "Black Layer Chicks" at the auction. There were more hens but I wanted Buff Wyandottes really bad so i rehomed the other girls.

poodlepill: thank you! I am very surprised at how much color he has on him because all of the girls are/were jet black. He is a very handsome guy.

Your birds sound beautiful! Both red and silver are great colors. It sounds like you have put a lot of work into your birds. I'd love to see pictures!
I am enjoying my chicks. They change so quickly!!! The chicks from Friday are already developing more adult feathers (I'm sure there is a more accurate term for that...) and more complex patterns. I was paranoid about house fires with the heat lamp, so I bought an EcoGlow which came in today. The chickies are spending their first night in the dark. When I peek in, they are all under the Eco peeping and chatting quietly with one another. It is the sweetest sound I've heard them make so far.

I am enjoying every step of this process!!!

I posted this picture last week of my tailles rooster,..and yes, I found out he is a rooster,..he was crowing bright and early this morning!

I know for sure I am keeping him.

I have another rooster that i am posting a picture of, he is an EE and he is beardless and has a BIG comb. I seen where you all were talking about the pea combs and egg color,..what exactly type of a comb does he have? Does this have anything to do with what egg gene color he is carrying?

Thanks!

He appears to have a cushion comb, which contains both rose and pea comb alleles. He could very likely have the blue egg gene (O). Very beautiful rooster, I am breeding for cushion combs myself.

Thank you,..he is a very nice rooster. I wasn't sure whether I should keep him, but I am looking for the blue/green egg genes, so maybe he is a keeper. All my other roosters has combs like this one pictured below. Is this a pea comb?
