I had a question about khaki or grey colored eggs, would they come from olive eggers? My SIL has a hen that lays grey colored eggs and she got it from a friend who moved away so no way to find out what it is. My SIL doesn't even know what chicken it is coming from. I was thinking I could breed my 3 EE's and my blue(splash?) Marans rooster. I was considering maybe putting them together and seeing what I would get.

You would get khaki eggs from an olive egger bred back to a brown egg layer. The grey I'm not so sure of...maybe a khaki egg layer bred to a white egg layer?????

So many people say that EEs look like hawks. When I first saw Lady Black Beard, I thought she looked like a raven. Very cool!

That's an interesting color. Blue/red splash? (I don't know my colors!) Do you have a picture of his face? I've seen so many dark beards on light chickens, but the white beard on a darker color looks striking. Very pretty!

The photos make it hard to see the true colors, but I think they are all EEs. Even a purebred Ameraucana that doesn't meet the color standard would be lumped in with the EEs. You can look on the breeders club website to see the accepted colors. http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html No muffs/beard is an EE. Also, check the bottoms of their feet for any sign of yellow on the pads. Green legs are not allowed for Ams, and the yellow indicates a mix.

8 months is a long time to start laying, but certainly not unheard of. It's probably the lack of sunlight. When the days start getting longer after Christmas, that might help them along. Also, make sure they get adequate protein in their feed and no calcium supplement (often included in layer feed) until they have started laying. Extra unneeded calcium is not good for them and can cause problems.

They are all pretty girls and look to have pea combs, so you will probably get lovely green-blue eggs soon. Good luck!

My "grey" egg layer looks to be a green back to a blue or a white. It's also the only matte egg I'm getting so far.

Question: I free range my chickens and also feed them chicken crumble that is available at all times. Lately they are looking thinner than last month. Do chickens tend to lose weight in the winter because there is not as much green/bugs to eat? This is my first winter with them. I know that my RIR is going thru a molt and looks sad, but the other chickens just look skinny. Are any of you experiencing the same thing or should I look for another reason?
