Yes, she does get along great with the silkies. She has since day one. They are all about the same size now and the two roos have started crowing. I love the sound of it because it makes me feel like I live on a farm, which has always been a dream of mine. I can't wait til the silkies are old enough to start laying. I might even leave a couple eggs to hatch just to see what they turn out to look like. I also want to get a few more hens. I'd like some sort of japanese, definitely a barred rock, and maybe a bantam cochin or a silver spangled hamburg. I think I'm going to need to expand my coop soon lol!

CHICKEN MATH STRIKES AGAIN!!!!

Silkie eggs are seriously cute. I couldn't eat my first dozen or so - I had to blow out the shells, they were too cute to just crack apart.

Silkies are also notorious for going broody - leave any eggs in there and you may find a growling fluffball hunkered down over them.

Penny has a tail - all my EEs that had a long tail early were girls. There is hope that SHE will lay a nice green egg!

Wow everyone has such lovely different EEs! Can't wait for mine to grow up and see what they will look like. Chicken math is getting to me, I started out with 3 RIR hens someone gave us, then got an EE rooster, then had to get 4 EE babies at the farm store. I had to go back to get more chick feed and some hay, of course they had 3 more cute little fluffies and they had to come home with me too. Must not go back to the feed store until chicks are all gone!
These are my new babies, approximately a week old (hoping they are all pullets).

Thank you! I wasn't expecting her to be show quality or anything, but yes, we are very proud of her. She lays one egg every day and hasn't missed a day yet since she started. They are pretty good sized eggs too. I think we definitely got our $12 worth out of her lol. Here's a pic of the very first three eggs she ever layed for us...

Sweeettt!! They are gorgeous dahling!!! (a little southern slant on "I'm so jealous! hahaha)

My EEs at three months.

From this thread I've seen some gorgeous EEs, so I thought I'd share a photo of my rare find with this batch. The top photo is Remedios- in three batches of EEs I've never had her pattern or size. She's as big as the cockerels, and has more black on her than I typically see. When she was a peep she was dark chocolate brown with just a little tan on her sides.

The cockerel has blue patches on him, but of course, is a cockerel and won't be staying long with me. No blue anywhere else in flock. Sigh.

Then there's one of four that I'm really going to have to study to tell apart. Yes, I spend way too much time on identifying and naming my girls. I really do love this 'typical' patterning and coloring.

And then finally- Pearl. No beard, no cheek tufts and she's a straight up spazz. I'm guessing either a Leghorn got into the EE breeding pen, or some serious recessive genes have emerged in her. She's going to have beautiful coloring, but my guess is that she'll be my first casualty even with a clipped win (just feathers) she tries to bail over a seven foot fence when something frightens her in the slightest. We shall see.

So my question to the thread...

Anyone else have a recessive gene EE? Do they still lay blue/green eggs? Am I just in a wait-and-see situation?

Remedios is beautiful, love that gold on black.

About Pearl, Its not always recessive genes showing up. The hatcheries are still crossing birds in - so she might have come from a recent cross using Leghorn - on purpose. That's how they up the egg count, and why a lot of EEs have the skinny leghorn bodies. There is still a chance for blue/green eggs - because most do try to keep that gene. Some hatcheries do not even do that - which is why you now find EEs laying brown and white eggs without fluffy faces and with straight combs. Does Pearl have a rose comb? That gene is closely linked to the blue egg gene. Usually they will go together, but there is no guarantee. I have a rose combed EE here that lays white eggs - phoey!
