Hi all, I have an 11 week EE, bought at the feed store as a "sexed pullet Araucana". Well, it is rumpless, but of course is not an Araucana. I got it with 2 cochins, a silkie and a "mystery bantam", which turned out to be a silver sebright. So, out of 5 chicks, 4 being unsexed, the only one I KNOW is a boy is the sebright. He showed his true colors weeks ago and has been crowing for about a week or so.

The EE, however, has me very confused. From the beginning it has been the "mamma" to all the other chicks, I assume because it towers over them. It was very skittish for a while, but has calmed down a lot and is easily handled now. But, for the last 3 mornings, it has been "crowing". Well, sort of, not like a regular rooster crows, and it only does it a few times in the morning and I have not heard it do it outside or in the evening (they sleep in the living room), while the sebright does it all day. The comb is pink but not at all red like the sebright. There are no wattles, but EE's don't really get them, do they? There are no sickle feathers that I can see (my EE hen has the same "pointy" feathers, but it's an illusion). I don't see any hackle feathers, but because it doesnt have a tail, it's hard to tell, it's wings pretty much cover it's entire back. This is a video I took this morning of them both

It doesn't act "rooish", like the other roo's I have (or have had). Ironically, I also have a serama pullet that "crowed" when she was about 3 or 4 months old

Pleeeeeeeeze tell me there is still a chance it's a girl.

Thanks, he is only a couple months old...soo probably gonna be a bit before we get any chicks, lol.
And the only girls I have to cross him on are Wellies, a pair of buff Orps and a RIR....

If you look back at the pic of our EE Roo...he has nada for waddles and his comb is not red at all ! I would say those are not a good indicator..I have seen pics of 6 month old EE Ros still looking pretty pinkish in the head gear.

He flies them tailfeathers high up and acts very "ROOish" which is what lead me to the conclusion that he is most likely a fella.

i'm confused, are you saying mine is a roo or not a roo. There are no tail feathers to judge by, and it isnt "strutty" like the sebright. I think I fixed the videos

Flower chicks. My somewhat educated guess is that it is indeed a cockerel. It is harder to tell w/o the tail feathers but that doesn't sound like a hen crow to me, just an inexperienced one. His comb also is more developed than most pullets of the same age.

Well ceeeraaap.. maybe he will be one of those roosters who only crows a couple times. I'm so disappointed, i was so excited to ha e another EE hen

I agree, It's a boy! he stands erect chest out. Hens only do that if they are fighting. And that is a sad crow. But all young roo have sad crows. You might get lucky and have a soft sounding adult crow. I have had glass shattering crows and cracked muffled crows. My currant roo has a deep crow. The high pitched ones of the game fowl drive me crazy! I hate going to chicken shows for that every reason. 100 lil roosters crowing at once is maddening. But your guy is pretty.

Mostly black.In pure breeds blacks are often black and yellow.Called extended black in genetic terms as the black extends to cover the white areas.In mixed colors it is variable.That is why I say mostly black.
