That happened to us the other day.

We built a pen to attach to the coop. It is just hard wire and pvc. We had the dogs out (one of which snacked on a br chick a month or so back). We decided to sit in the pen and let all the chickens play together with us supervising. (Also to see if the dogs could get it).

We let the two hens in (It is 8 by 14ft so big big), then penny the 2-3 month old chick. Then put the 5 week old chicks in and then brought out the 3 week old chicks. (It was a warm day.) So we are in our lawn chairs, everyone is getting along great and all of the sudden all the little, 3 week old chicks just go right out the cage!!!!!

I start screaming cause I just know one of the dogs is gonna eat the chicks!!! The dogs were probably looking at me wondering what in the world I was doing. I looked like a banshee for sure! Ams flailing and screaming! The chicks are just happily scratching around clueless to the peril!

My 13 yr old daughter runs out of the door and starts scooping them up and handing them to me throught the wire, that was clearly big enough for them to fit through! Duh me! Thankfully all 6 chicks were recovered without any harm. They now play in the baby gate inside the pen when we let them out! That was close!

Yup all that has happened in my yard also. Right now they are triple fenced but still tiny and I keep an eye on my dog. She likes to sit at the front and watch the activity on the street but when I see her leave that spot, it time for a check .

Here's my....um...'girls'.
I almost expect this one to start crowing. Does she look like a roo?

I'm so glad I dont have dogs in my yard, just one less thing I have to worry about when it comes to let my little chicks out for the first time. Altho I do have to worry that they might not get accepted and they might force the chicks to jump the wall to the neightbors house and become the neightbors dog meal!!!
I've lost like 6 chickens like that to my neightbors dog. Sadly I lost my only EE Rooster.
I'll be looking for a nice EE rooster soon. Anybody out there in southern California has one avaliable or will have one in the next coming months?

Thats a hen right there, I believe she's got the Silver Suckwing Hen pattern. Roosters usually dont come colored like that.
How old are they?

I'm not sure. I bought them just over a week ago, and they had very pale pinkish faces. The one with the larger comb had a very small comb. I've marveled at the growth of it over such a short period.
The lady I bought them from claims that at least one of their siblings is laying now.
