Thanks, Cali Chick. I will look into that HovaBator. I have a Buff Orp named Buffy, too. Mine is only 19 weeks old and just now starting to grow out her comb. She is behind in maturing than her 5 flockmates. I am hoping for eggs soon. The other girls are getting really red faced. I ended up having one roo....he is only 14 weeks old. Can;t decide whether to keep him or not. I really don't want a roo....especially a BCM. I'm not partial to black chickens....and if I have a roo, I would like one that would contribute more towards blue eggs. I know, I would have lots of green eggs since I have 3 EE's. But, I guess I would rather have a male EE if I have to have one..(Which I don't).. I have a friend who will take this BCM if I decide to rehome him. But, so far, he is really sweet. If I ever have to fight him off with a stick for any reason, he will have to go. I will just order eggs.

Regards to your comment about the BCM, they have a reputation for being a very easy going rooster. I do not know for sure but I do know a very nice BCM/Silkie cross who is very easy going. And Black roosters do not always mean black hens because of the mix of gene colors, alles dominate and recessive etc. Olive eggs are good also ! Just saying this because if you can find a nice mannered rooster, your are lucky. So far my main man is a large blue silkie. I am growing out a very sweet Polish male. He is a bearded golden laced and becuase he carries the white egg gene, he will have no effect on egg colors.

That is probably a mix of pea and rose combs. Probably from a Wyendotte mix. Wyendottes and Orpingtons lay pink eggs. If an Orpington, the comb would be a mix of pea and straight.

Really?????? Wyandotte and Orphingtons look brown to me..... They are light brown but brown.

If the shell is pink that is a new one on me. There are only 2 egg shell colors blue and white..... brown is just a coating. It sure looked pink all the way through....... would like to know how that happend........

I guess I just have heard all sorts of horror stories about Roos chasing people and pets. I don't want to have to carry a stick when I walk around my yard worrying about a rooster trying to get me. Does everyone with roos have this problem or is it just the occassional rooster that people write about?

my EE Yokohama X very good looking birds ! Can't wait to see their eggs ! How is the Yokohama production quality as per reputation. I am thinking that they are raised mostly for their beauty but then I really do not know much about them.

2StrayRoos Your pretty buff hen makes me think that she has some butterecup in her makeup although Ronott say that her comb is a combination of Rose and Pea. And really Ron, I know from here and the Yahoo Ca site that your are very experienced. Silly me but who can say unless you do know which breed were used in her mix.

Easter Eggers and mixes of all kinds are so interesting. Although I enjoy seeing a beautiful full bred Silkie, Polish or Ameraucana and many others, the EEs are so much fun. The legbar which is now in the US will be a great addition to those of us raising birds with the blue eggs gene as they seem more easy to keep than the Aracuna. Look up the breed to find out what I mean.

Oh yea, and I got the BDCM because it was hatched out of a green egg and I was looking for an olive egger. Unfortunately it turned out to be a roo. He was a 3rd generation olive egger. I guess if he had been a she, she would have had khaki colored eggs. He is actually 7/8 BCM and 1/8 Ameracana. Who knows, maybe he could produce some odd green colored egg layers.

In my opinion that is dumb !!! Money is too hard to get and keep. PINK eggs to me are just pale brown and althought they are nice well I just do not value any color eggs at 100 USD no sir, not me. I love to have a hugh variety of colors in my eggs but gees. And I agree that Wyandotts and Orpingtons lay light shades of brown eggs.

As far as roosters, I do believe that they way that they are treated has a great deal to do with their behavior. But some breeds seem to be less agressive than others. My conditions do not allow keeping of many males. I think that they only do well when they can be free to range. Anyone who has raised sweet and effective roosters has my appreciation and respect.
