So I have some crappy news. My hen that was hatching chicks ended up being quite unsuccessful. She did have 4 chicks hatched when i first checked on her but i left them expecting her to be off the nest soon. It's been VERY warm here lately, the thermometer said 100F today(in the shade) and when i went to check on her she wasn't on the nest and it was a mess, smelled terrible and one of the chicks was dead. I found her in the coop and couldn't find her chicks anywhere.

I do think my sister got a picture on her phone so I can post that up, they little EE's were SO cute.
I do have another hen on eggs but with this heat I am not expecting them to make it either.

All the birds have been dragging around panting all day, I even went and bought them a bag of ice for their water i felt so bad... Makes me feel sorry for chicks in the desert!

I live in Woodland CA and it is often hot here in the summer. Many of us have misters set up for the hot days. Home depot and OSH sell ones that connect to a garden hose. They help a lot and since you do not get the heat that much, a better choice than the ones that install in pvc pipe.

Ron, did it take your chickens a while to get used to them? I have set up a line of misters, however, the chickens will go back and STAY in their coop. When they do come out, they are shaking their heads, like the mist is bothering their noses. I have the misters at the top of the run, going along about 20 feet. I had wondered if I cut it down to only two or three misters if that would be more tolerated by the chickens.
I do set out 4 milk jugs that I have frozen water in. They LOVE those! I also have pans of water out in the chicken run. They do like to stand in those. They are very entertained when I float ice cubes in the pans of water and their drinking water.

Here in the shadow of Death Valley the temperature has been as high as 113. So far I have lost two birds one Polish and one Silkie both were about four months old. Egg production is down, but as long as the birds have water to stand in they do OK. They also like to hunker down in the wet sandy soil.

The two I have sit on the ground with flexible metal hose. I have them at about 3 feet high and they mist up in the air. They love it when it is over 100!. They don't even pant.

Yes, maybe try cutting down on the number of misters.

Mine love running around in the rain(It only rains here in the winter).
