WOW! Beautiful colours- what cross was this? Body shape is just like mine but yours must be bigger as mine born mid may & looks same size. Yours looks like a hen-correct? I am SO interested in seeing these crosses, Thankyou

I think it's a SLW EE cross, my girls didn't lay the eggs. I wish it were a girl... I'm pretty sure it's a boy though, but you never know until the crow!

Hey, my daughter just told me a friend of hers from college wrote a cute children's book about hatching chickens so I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire. It was wonderful and accurate! It's called Samantha Hatches the Chicken Egg by Daisy Griffin. If you have kids or grandkids, this is a great book to tell them about hatching eggs. Enjoy! oh yea, she also mentions BYC in the book!!!!

Ok this question is kind of off the wall but at about how many weeks does an EE start laying and when do chickens normally wait til the next year to start laying? (Meaning what month do they usually stop or wait before laying eggs?)

I think there is a lot of variation. My EE (hatched in early March) was a bit over 5 months when she started laying at the end of July. Now that the days are getting shorter, it may cause a bit of delay in the start times. I have two Ameraucanas that were hatched in May and am hoping they will lay this fall, but won't be surprised if it takes longer.

As far as stopping laying, I think is is more often a slow down rather than an outright halt (think 2-3 eggs per week vs 5-6). Have heard folks mention that the laying will start to pick up again as soon as the days start getting longer (end of Dec), but don't know how true this is.

Of course using artificial lighting will change the natural cycles.

I have two EEs that are hatchmates. They are 27 1/2 weeks old. One started laying at 22 weeks and I'm still waiting on the other! Go figure! But I do love EEs.

I have not been on here in a while. This is one active thread!!! If you don't mind I have 2 EE's that are about 15 weeks old and I can't tell their sex. I really want one to be a pullet but am doubtful. Here are pics of them & their mom.

That is really interesting, when people say that their chickens stop laying for the winter times I was thinking that they halt altogether. Raising chickens is quite an experience. I must say that I love my EE as well, she is quite the bird of the bunch. I am also hoping that all my chickens start laying before the fall. If they don't, does that mean they won't start til spring?

I would say that is a pullet. The hackle feathers are rounded and if I'm thinking correctly if it was a male it would have some red on its feather wings. (also the comb isn't very red or well developed yet) That pullet is gorgeous by the way!

Do you think both are pullets or just one? They are really hard to tell apart but the one I think might be a male has more tail feathers right now. Its the one on the left and last three white pics.
