The egg carton trick for lockdown question

If these method is used, Using a sponge is preferred then since water in the port might spill. How many and how big a sponge should be?

We cut up toilet paper rolls to place the eggs in.This way we can customize the size to the egg. for example our Pheonix eggs and D'Uccle are smaller than our Leghorns or our commercial layers. But it does mean you have to open the bator to rotate the eggs. The other bonus is it makes clean up easier when cleaning the bator after the hatch as it keeps all the debris contained to one area.

I went ahead and locked the incubator down after I put the dozen eggs in the egg carton. I cut down a bunch off the carton. Of course now that I am in lockdown and I look into the incubator I think the egg carton holes may be too big for the mediumish sized faverolles eggs. Oh well, I respect the concept of lockdown so I will sit on my hands and the healthy peeps will make their presence known. Thanks everyone for the input.

I am a visual person ... I need pictures of these things! I am testing temps in my homemade bator now and need all the info I can get for this new adventure!

So you guys only use the egg carton for lock down time?? What about for the whole incubation time??
I'm torn on what to do for my duck eggs that i have coming...

i'm in the middle of my 1st hatch and from what i understand......people use the cartons just for lockdown. BUT.....i believe someone was saying earlier in this post that you COULD use egg carton throughout the whole incubation process if you wanna tilt the bator to turn the eggs (without opening up the bator). i have an egg turner.....so i'm gonna take mine out of the egg turner on day 18 and put them in a cardboard/paper egg carton (i was told to stay away from the styrofoam ones)......cut holes in the bottom of each egg compartment for circulation......and sit back and wait....

I had some shipped eggs that were handled really roughly so I let them rest 24+ hours and left them in a modified egg carton the whole time. I did so because the air sacks had detached and that was the only way to get them in the right position to have any sort of chance of hatching. I lost four/ten to blood rings but the rest are going strong. I made a turner for mine. Lockdown starts tomorrow so....I guess we'll see how it went soon enough, right?
