being 10 degrees this morning, 'feeling like -4' I went out to check on my girls and bring them fresh water.
The lone egg (I thought I heard her lay it about an hour earlier) was very cold.
So I gave them their morning seeds, put down the water (last nights waterer was frozen to the blocks, urgh) and grabbed the egg.
Then I noticed the crack.
I cracked it open and put it in the skillet. It was semi frozen I guess.
I managed to make a 'perfect' over-easy.
And the yolk was cold.
is it normal for chickens to not lay as much in the cold?
how do you manage your eggs when it is this stinkin' cold?

If feed and water is always accessible, cold should not impact production. Daylight period greatly affects production. Frequent gathering of eggs is necessary to prevent freezing.

no more frozen eggs.
the chicks survived the arctic weekend

And I found that it is a good thing to be the treat dispenser.
This morning one of my hens got out of the pen.
Thankfully the dogs were still in the warm bed.
I was able to lure the girl back to the door and let her back in the run without having to chase her.
