the [egg] wait is driving me crazy!!!

I wish my 25 week old leghorn looked that mature. Her comb is still pink and quite small. I keep wondering if there is something wrong. What should I look for. She seems quite healthy and very active. She is always the first one to run over to me and see if I have any treats. I feed all 7 of my pullets lay crumble and they get BOSS and some scratch but not very much. I was letting them free range but I noticed that they weren't eating very much of the crumble and was also worried that they may be hiding them so I am keeping them in their run for the time being. Wish I knew why my leghorn is not seeming to mature.

So.... I posted yesterday that I have a 25 week old enormous black copper maran that has shown absolutely no signs of egg laying, and guess what!!!!

She squatted today! Squatted like nobody's business! Out of nowhere! My son stuck his foot out to her and she popped a squat like her life depended on it!

I ran around and did the chicken dance and yelled to my husband, "she just squatted"!!!!

My neighbors would have thought I was crazy, but they know me and love me for my chicken obsession, and now they're excited, too, to see the first dark brown egg!

I can't wait.

sweet! They wait till we least expect it!

keep us updated guys! The more of you who have girls that have started to lay there are on this tread, the more envious I become! I cant WAIT to join the club!

Last week at this time, I had not gotten a single egg...yesterday I got five! It's going to happen any day for you all...and when it does, it's awesome.

Squatting? What does the squatting look like? Is it like someone getting ready to sit down on a potty? I've noticed the babies will sort of move their butts a little backwards as they push out a big poo - is it something like that?

So we have a large red comb & wattles (check), we have a flopping comb (check) and now do we need to look for squatting (?) next or is there something between large comb/wattles and squatting?

I feel like an expectant grandmother! I WANT MY EGG!!

Snow White's comb went from pinkish and small to larger and red over 1 week period - so don't worry it will happen. She's on Purina Start and Grow because we have so many smaller ones around. She was on Manna Pro Chick Starter until she turned 10 weeks old. Then I moved another clutch out there and switched to the Purina. I give them mealy worms for treats to get them into the run & she gets an occassional corn on the cob and scratch, otherwise they eat bugs & grass for a limited time when I'm outside with them & they're allowed to free range.

I don't know about you, but since this is my only older chick I am practically guarding her to keep her from getting hurt or injured so I can get an egg - it's too weird I know! The next batch of pullets are 4 weeks behind her and not one is a Leghorn - so who knows when they will start laying!

Squating is what they do for a rooster to mount them, but in a rooster-less flock, POL and older will still squat. Look for her to kindof "sit" with her keel parallel to the ground, slightly lifted wings, and they also seem to kindof shift their weight back and forth, almost as if they are trembling...it's hard to explain. They may do this if you walk up to them, or put your hand over them, etc.

Can anyone get a pic of their girls doing the egg squat and post it for us?
