We've had our 3 beautiful Golden Comet hens for just under 2.5 weeks now and got our first egg today (they're just about 20 weeks old). It's smaller than an average sized egg but not overly small. It was light brown, beautifully shaped, and had a nice solid shell. I couldn't wait any longer and fried it up tonight. My daughter and I indulged in it and it was delicious!
Our chickens seem very happy and have gotten quite friendly. They spend their day in a chicken tractor, moving about the yard every day or two and come out in the evening to free range when I can keep an eye on them. We have several hawks in the area...one swooped at them a couple of nights ago, and I don't want to leave them out there alone.
So we're feeding them Layena with the added Omega, and I put in a touch of grit and oyster shell for them. Fresh water of course, and they seem to do quite well scratching, pecking, getting worms and bugs, and chasing the occasional fly around the yard. They are so much fun and the highlight of my day. I really can't wait to get home from work each night to spend some time with them.
We're looking forward to a steady supply of fresh eggs now.
