The end of my chicken era

Awww....she sure is a sweetie! I am so sorry she is struggling now. :hugs You gave her a wonderful full life to have lived this long!!! I had a hen live 9+ yrs and I thought that was old. :p Just keep her comfortable, prepare an area on the floor to sleep, old birds don't have the balance and strength to roost all night. She will do fine in a pile of hay or straw. She may get cold now that she has less muscle mass so if she fluffs up a lot, you might offer up a heat lamp. Enjoy your girl! :)
Better than a heat lamp, she’s in my HOUSE! Haha. It’s 19 degrees and when the whole flock was together they toughed out cold weather. I felt bad for her all by herself out there! I’m a spoiler!

Whitey, you've seen a lot....been places....you're obviously a wily girl.....you know your way around and above all...you're a survivor!! The best we can hope for when it's time for us to move on is to know we will be missed and remembered fondly. You have accomplished that so rest easy.....know you are cared for.....and let go gently when the time is right. With admiration of a life well lived....
That was great! Thanks!

Oh you are a star!!! :) She deserves pampering right now and you are the perfect chicken mom!! :hugs

The beginning started in 2008. I was at a local park and it seemed someone had dumped off 8 (adult) chickens. Two each of 4 different kinds. So, naturally, they followed me home and lived out their lives with me. When we were down to one, we got six more from a friend. They dwindled due to various reasons, and we found ourselves back down to one. Oddly enough, she was the one we were down to before, from the original gang (flock, excuse me). Talk about one tough bird! She survived everything our flock had been through, and two vacation trips to Florida! OK, so I spoil My animals what can I say. I’m not really sure how old this girl is since I got her in 2008 as an adult, but I’ve had her for 12 years. She’s a white leghorn. She’s struggling now, tho she’s comfortable and doesn’t seem to be in any pain, So we leave her be. She cant get up on the perch anymore so we put her up there at night and take her down in the morning. She mostly sits and doesnt stand or walk around much anymore. Having some trouble eating and pooping. We brought in and are spoiling her in her last days. She’s a good old girl and I guess I’m just putting this out there for you all to send positive vibes and hopes for a peaceful passing if that’s what is to be. Her name is Whitey and here she is enjoying some millet Click on this to see Whitey. Thanks for caring and always being such a great go to group during my chicken days.

Lots of hugs for you and Whitey. 12 years. That truly is an era. Hoping the passing will be easy on your girl.

Naaa We enjoyed the journey, but it did hold us back a lot from traveling. We have a camper now and working towards no outside animals to ask friend to care for while we are gone.
But I really did love all my chickens!!
Hmmm ... Camper ... Travel ... You don't want to miss anything, so you really should have a nice alarm clock ... all organic, of course ... and I have just the ticket for you! General Tso is a tiny Nankin Bantam ... small, colorful and full of lovable personality. He rides on shoulders and walks on a leash. He sleeps on a shoebox and will wear a diaper. Of course, the trick would be getting DD to give him up ... but it IS getting to be hatching season ... sooooo ... ;)
