Looking under the ordinance list there is an entry for the Town of Manlius, NY where I reside. It seems the person who made the entry in 2013 was told by the clerk then that there were no restrictions of any kind to keeping chickens. I was excited to find this out as I have become interested in getting my own backyard flock. However, I decided to speak to the town code enforcement officer to just dot my i's and cross my t's, and I got the opposite answer. According to him, in residential zones they are prohibited, but there are "restricted agriculture" zones where they can be kept. Obviously I am confused by the contradictory information, and apparently this is the code officers first week on the job. Looking at the town code online http://ecode360.com/MA1592 there is no section that states explicitly that poultry cannot be kept, however the zoning codes seem to be written in a way that prohibit uses of the land or structures on it for anything other than what they list, which might be what is used to say it is prohibited in my neighborhood.

I don't have any knowledge or experience in deciphering the mumbo-jumbo in the code, so if anyone could help me out, or offer any advice I would appreciate it. For now I am thinking I may have to give up on having my own flock.
