All I know is that many attest to how well it works, but it all depends on the surgeon. My daughter had it done, and it has been wonderful. It's nothing like fusing. The downtime is minimal. She was down for a few days, then could go to the restroom, and do minimal things. By the second week, she accompanied her sister at the grocery store. She still couldn't lift anything, but was walking around just fine. After 3 days, she was no longer taking anything for pain. Her follow up appointment was 2 weeks after the surgery, and he released her to drive, and start physical therapy. She still couldn't lift anything heavy at that time, but could lift up to 5 pounds. After 2 months of physical therapy, she could lift anything she would have before the surgery, and she returned to work. She's fine now. Again, it all depends on the surgeon. It sounds like the ortho surgeon may not be qualified to do the procedure, which is why he claimed it doesn't work.
Can they do a steroid shot every few months to help with the pain, and inflammation? One of my cousins had to do that for years, until she finally broke down, and got surgery. They could at least refer him to a pain clinic, so he could get a prescription for pain patches.
