The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Sorry to hear one of your old girls isn't doing well. :hmm

I had a hawk kill my favorite polish last week. It's only the third hawk kill in 20 years. One has been hanging around looking for an easy mean. They always take the favorites.

Aw, crap, I'm sorry, Lisa. That's a pretty good record, though, only the 3rd in 20 years.

Sorry about your hen! Those migrating birds are hungry.

Cyn, sounds like little syncope (fainting) spells to me, that usually means decreased heart function - not necessarily a heart attack, just weak spells from lack of adequate oxygen from decreased blood flow.

Could very well be. Meg was a humongous hen, about a year younger than Emily is now. I think she must have been at the very least 11 lbs or more, definitely larger than most of my Brahma gals. Her heart could have been failing, certainly.

By the way the hawk has been acting I believe it's a young one. It will flutter around in the trees above my birds. For a while they didn't seem to realize the danger. I hope they get it now. I cannot protect them. They must remain in good cover themselves which they mostly do.

The polish are currently molting. I usually trim their crest a few times as they molt so they can see. Due to my knee surgery I was slow in trimming so poor Margarite couldn't see the hawk coming I guess. I blame myself. The 3 remaining polish have since been trimmed but they have been hiding in the shed, so I think they understand what happened. The hawk took the one friendly curious polish. I will miss her following me around and being nosy.

Her actual full name was Sister Mary Marguerite because she was always looking over my shoulder watching me work. I don't often name my birds, some just earn quirky names because they are different. The other 3 polish just think I'm crazy and run from me.

You're very much like me. We remember every one that passes through our lives, their voices, their little quirks, etc. I'm sorry about poor little Marguerite.
