I have 4 2TB hard drives. It's only the one that is failing. I back up my main hard drive, with the operating system. I don't back up the others. So far, I've gotten the most important files off. It's slow going, but I'm proceeding to get as many of them transferred as I can. Dh is setting up the new hard drive, and getting it partitioned, so Windows will recognize it, and it will be ready to go, when I get ready to put it in.

My newest computer has an SSD drive, and they are very expensive, so instead of storing files on my computer a lot of them are now on external drives - 2 separate drives, and probably still not secure. I'm just not ready to head to the Cloud yet.

I agree about the Cloud. Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, etc. have all been hacked. No way am I going to store information on the cloud.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that I have a 2nd broody. Maretta, my EE hen who raised chicks last spring, then went broody after she got sick of them and I didn't let her do it again, is clucking her head off. Silly EE will be 8 years old in early spring. She raised 4 batches of chicks early in her life, then took a long break from it and now, she's making up for all those years she didn't have them, I guess. What is up with these nuts going broody when the weather is turning frigid?? She and Brandy and anyone else with that notion will have to wait about 3 months, that's all there is to it.

RE computer drives...

A couple years ago I quit saving any files to the hard drive of my computer. i purchased 2 external drives - 1 for using and one for backup. I found an incredible sync product called Good Sync 2go. I got the one for the external drives...think it was about $35. It is placed on my external drive, not my computer, but you can get one for the computer and just back up to an external if you want.

I have it set to only go one way (to backup) but it can work both ways. I just use the one to work on all the time and the other as the backup.

I LOVE that program. I just tell it to analyze and it finds the differences then tell it to sync.

Before using it I have lost drives and files in the past. No more. I bought one for my home computer and one for work. Love, love love it.

Leahs Mom, I have the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Slim External USB Drive. I have my main drive backed up on it, so no worries there. The drive that failed was for storage. Dh looked to see if it was still under warranty. They are under warranty for 3 years. This one is 3 years 4 months old, so out of warranty. It's a Seagate Barracuda, so not an off brand, or the cheapest on the market. I did expect it to last at least 4 years. Usually I begin changing them out when the get to be 4 to 4 1/2 years old.

Once in awhile, when we fix a computer for a friend, or something, the first thing we do is either back up their drive, or at least save the pics, music, and documents. We use one of the old hard drives for this purpose. At least 1 of them is 10 years old, and works fine. Another one is at least 8 years old, and it too is working great. While I don't expect them all to last that long, like I said, I did expect it to go at least 4 years.

My 2 external drives are Seagate 2tb also. I also have a passport (Western digital).

I do like the sync program because it moves much faster than just regular backup or copy function. I used to just do the drag/copy method and it was just incredible how long it took. I also like that it analyzes before syncing so that it only copies/updates the files that need to be done.

PS:
I'll have to remember to just replace these drives at about the 2.6 - 3 year mark. Usually I wait until they end up failing which is just plain stupid. But I hate to spend money unless I know I need to. Hopefully one of the 2 will still be working, I can buy a new one to replace the failed drive, then back up to the new drive and replace the 2nd old one.

I also need to replace my home laptop. It is 10 years old now and running win 7 still . But...because I do graphic design, my computers are usually expensive when I replace them. I'm loving the new one I got for work a couple weeks ago. Now I need to duplicate that one here.
