The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Delawares are a special breed. They're smart and funny and in-your-face and can get into trouble if they're bored. They refuse to let you ignore them. I wouldn't want an entire flock of Georgies because of that. Her half sister, Ellie, passed at 5 1/2 and she was left with Isaac, who died a year later so Georgie's been the only Delaware here for awhile.

Georgie is still sitting and looks very sleepy. She has a heat lamp pointed at the floor for a warm spot so she is fine with her peeps. They won't bother her. She is 2nd in command in that group, with June being head hen, June who is older than Georgie by a year. I don't think Georgie will make it to her 10th hatchday next month. It's expected, I guess, but doesn't mean I won't miss these old gals.
I am sorry to hear of your old gals going downhill. Some mornings I feel like that.
I want to a ceramic light bulb for my brooder , where is the best place to get them.?

I look on Amazon for a 2 pack of 100w or 150w ones, but be careful that they're not coming from China or you might never get it. A 2 pack for around $15 is a good buy. They last longer and don't blow as easily as the black night heat reptile bulbs do. If you plug and unplug those bulbs, they may not come back on. The ceramics can take it, but I always put a guard across the fixture made of hardware cloth in case the bulb is defective and separates from the socket part somehow. They stay hot for a long, long time after power is shut off from them, longer than the incandescent bulbs do.

Thank you, I hope you all have a great day and stay warm.

You're welcome! I use these all the time now. They throw zero light, of course. You can get them in a higher wattage, but they are more pricey and harder to find.

It is so cold. Sunny, but cold. Deceptively bright and sunny. If I had a barn full of younger birds, I could open the barn and let them out, but I have almost half classified as elderly and, now with Georgie, actually dying, so gonna leave them inside.

Good idea. I have never used the ceramic bulbs. I am thinking of hatching this spring. Do they work well for brooders also? My polish haven’t started laying again. They are taking a long break. They others have started up plus the young birds have been laying for a few months. I have a couple of pretty color eggs I would like to hatch and see what I get. Modesto is having their big show feb 2. I migh5 go down and look at pretty breeds.

When I used one in a brooder, I also use some sort of low light to draw them to it. I just never leave chicks completely in the dark, but they'll work fine for a brooder. You just have to feel under them to know if they're still working since there is no light.
