The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I thought you were going to say "fly strike" since the scabs were moving. I hope she recovers quickly.

Definitely not a fly strike. There was just infection and fluid under them, pushing the scabs upward. Been so cold, not many flies around, only warmed up within the last couple of days. Could be abcesses, but if they don't respond to treatment, could be necrotic tumors, I'm told. That would be bad for my sweet girl. I've never seen anything like this. I mean, I had a Belgian D'Anver hen with an oil gland tumor, but it wasn't infected like this, didn't smell bad. Poor Maretta really wanted me to pay attention to her today. If she hadn't been insisting on it, I'd never have found them. She seems healthy and active. She has a tiny bump in front of one eye that has been there for over a year, like a tiny face feather is trapped, but being so close to her eye, it's impossible to do anything about.

We just did her treatment for the day. The places are close together, no more than 1/4" apart from each other and the diameter of a quarter or slightly more, raised off her body about 1/4", maybe just a tad less than that. They look like giant flat-topped welts. One place began to bleed a tiny bit. They smell awful. We did warm epsom salts compresses, then slathered with Silver Sulfadiazene cream, put on gauze and Vet Wrap around her body. She held completely still the entire time, only flinched when she got her penicillin shot. Such a good girl!
I just don't know what to think of this. All we can do is treat as if it's infected wounds and hope that we can fix her. If they are tumors, nothing to be done for that sweet little hen except let her live with her group as long as she seems energetic and happy.

Can I just say :barnie? Rant alert.
Jane is in a dog cage because her head is split open. Her mother is a nasty piece of work and now, she almost got scalped. I'm SICK OF THIS! I do not need this on top of poor Maretta who didn't get her penicillin today because of this drama.
And Hector goes off like a crazy fire alarm that you can't shut off! I threw a pole at him today because after I grabbed Jane to rescue her, he kept going nuts and was walking about the pen just yelling his stupid head off for no reason. Jill needs to go and Hector can go with her, as far as I'm concerned right now and no, I don't want to keep a son of Hector's. I am so DONE with this! I already have enough on my plate with an apathetic and hurting husband who I have to drag into the barn to help me doctor birds, stuff that can't get done here, things we need to do, and no way out of this mess. No breeding anything! I'll go back to hatchery birds who die on me every two years.
