The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Aw Cyn, I'm glad you went and got him. You would never have forgiven yourself if something had happened to him. And see what you were able to do on your own!

Glad to hear about Nugget - hard to watch the oldtimers get older. I have two here at my house (cat and dog) and wonder often how long they will be here for.

Deacon isn't doing well. I think he reinjured whatever it was that was hurt way back with Isaac almost killed him. His comb is listing over to one side, eyes look weird. That crazy goober may have done himself in fighting. Could be a disc or something pinched.

Deacon was crowing this morning. That glazed over look and his curling comb were very worrisome last night. Will have to watch him today and keep him away from everyone. His feet need to heal up a little anyway so it's back to the single life for at least a few days for the goober.

Off to town for a very needed haircut, cat food and chick starter. Leaving you with my climbing roses in bloom today. The one on the house is the Minnehaha rose, a very hardy climber we keep cutting back so it doesn't pull the railing off, LOL. Finn sleeps on that chair cushion or the bench all the time.

Glad to hear that Deacon was crowing this morning and that Nugget drank on her own yesterday. Hopefully she will do so today as well.

Got a real kick out of your "Deacon and his feet of death" comment. LOL! Unfortunately, it wasn't very funny for Rex. :(

Your roses are beautiful! We just put up picket fencing around our garden and I am looking for climbing roses.

Difficult to grow roses when there is so much shade here, but the back area will be nice for it (except more accessible to deer) when and IF my land is finished back there. We hope to plant some apple and pear trees in that open area, though they won't produce much in our lifetime since fruit trees take ages to get going.

Got my hair cut, shorter than I actually intended, but hey, gets all the old stuff off there and I can start fresh. I don't color or do anything to it and even the cuts are few and far between. This one should last awhile. Haven't had hair this short in 20 years. Hard to know what to do when it's so darn thin and fine, but long hair when it's super thin on top makes you look like Benjamin Franklin. Used to be blonde, darker with age, barely starting to show some gray.

Rocky & Jet, shoulder ornaments. Rocky is getting gold in his hackles and wings now.

Wynette, trying to be broody again. Trying to convince her it's a bad idea.

Atlas with his injured comb. He is back with his hens. Deacon has to live apart from his a day or so, at least until I'm fairly sure he has his balance and his feet are not so raw. They'll probably pick at them anyway.

Hi Cyn, haven't written for a bit but it sounds like you have had a time. I have an abscessed wisdom tooth that was pulled then infected and the nerve going by it damaged. It flared up my diabetic problems so now I am on two kinds of insulin and a tablet.

. My older hens are not all laying and I have to watch them for problems but I still love the things bunches. They have such personalities now.
I received eggs from Kathy, Dells and GNH. I have 18 chicks.

. They quickly in one wk. outgrew the inside of my house and their box. Wow!! They have a light and are in a small coop outside. Very mouthy as you said about the Dells they have to check everything out with pecking. I hope for a least a few roosters to pick from. I am going to keep two this yr. I will keep part of the hens also. Some I am sure will have to go because this winter I will have to go to the other place for awhile. I have to have room to transport them. I hate to give any out. I get soo attached. I wish I could stay in one place. Mom is 89 this summer so I feel the need to be with her this winter. Time slips away so fast. I will be 70 this Nov. Yes my hair is thining some too. And white in places now. I keep thinking about you and your hens but have not gone over as far as Murphy in a long time.
We had a visitor from the woods the other night. A possum decided he wanted some coke Zero to drink. He bit through a cardboard carton into the cans and bit holes in them to get the drink out. What a mess. I saw him. It was a big one at that. I had left the cokes on my steps open to the outside. . No more. Take care and hope your little hens and feisty roosters are doing better.

Hi, GJ! Sounds like you have your hands full. Me, I am ready to be done with most of the roosters around here. They are always my favorites, but they keep me from being able to keep most of the hens in one location since they fight each other (except for the D'Anvers, who get along most of the time). Isaac can't be with us too much longer at his age and if Deacon keeps this up, neither will he.

I have only Atlas left as far as LF males and one extra in my bantam Cochin, Xander. Xander could live with the older hens if I didn't have Amanda, who can't stand up or get away from even an amorous little one. When Atlas was a teenager, he tore her comb and she was afraid of him after that. You can tell she knows she is vulnerable, just like Zane did.
