The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Bacon? That's a good one. I have been having toasted buttered bread with tomato slices and pepper and salt. That was my dinner for 2 days.

Yeah, bacon is pretty pricey, isn't it? We rarely have it anymore, but on occasion, find it cheaper at one of the grocery outlets. It sure tops off a tomato sandwich, though!

Well, Atlas's face is a bloody mess, though his feet are okay. Deacon's feet are scraped up again, one wattle a bit roughed up but his face is fine. They were at it again, this time, Atlas was under Deacon's coop, fighting at the fencing that blocks Deacon's pen off from going under the entire building. I didn't see them, only saw the other birds looking at something under the coop and clucking nervously. When I found Atlas, I chased him out of there-he's so tall, he could only squat walk to get out. I picked him up and called to DH to bring water and a rag and check on Deacon.

What is weird is that Atlas was breathing so hard, I thought he might keel over from heat stroke or a heart attack. Took awhile for it to slow down. When I picked up Deacon, he was calm, not even panting, no open mouth breathing at all. It was like the fight never happened, other than the entire back of one leg skinned up. Those two hate each other with a passion!

If you recall, Deacon is Atlas's uncle, the late Rex's brother. The not breathing heavy thing is worrisome since Deacon has that old neck injury from when Isaac jumped him and when he was fighting with Rex that day, Rex was not breathing heavily, either. Three weeks later, Rex died from internal injuries from that fight with his brother. So, hopefully, Deacon just has great lung capacity, not that he's injured in any way. The fencing they were fighting through is 2x4 wire with chickenwire covering it, just so young chickens can't get through under there.

I felt like pulling a "Mrs. Clemens" with them both. Mrs. Clemens is Ladyhawk's elderly neighbor. She puts bad roosters in time out, even spanks their fluffy bums. For some reason, it works for her, LOL. She has two sons of Rex#2 who co-manage her main laying flock and they get along with each other. She says they're mean because they won't let other roosters in there with them, though they are sweet with her and are fine with each other, a real team. One of them loves to jump on her shoulder and groom her hair, even at his adult size. They adore her. But the visual of her spanking one and putting him in a cage for "time out" makes me laugh.

I wish Deacon and Atlas, well, Deacon and anybody, would get along. Deacon is a great flock rooster, very agile, ready to defend his hens, so he'd be great for the main laying flock as a free ranger. He just fights with everyone when he's running loose. And he's so smart, so sweet and lovable. Ive never had a rooster who asked to be petted all the time like he does. He reminds me of Zane in so many ways, something in the soft, intelligent eyes, he just connects with us. I can't reproduce him because of the dwarf gene he carries, of course, but he's a treasure in all other ways (except he hates his nephew)
