The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Are you allowed to use some silicone sealant, or something like that to stop the leaking until they get out to fix it?

I'm not sure. I know there are some really great spray rubberized sealants in clear that would work, but I'm hesitant to do much until they get out here and work on it. After that, I may use one of those anyway. I can put a bucket under the three spots where it drips in hopes that I can control the moisture buildup inside the barn, at least. We worked with towels and a mop and most of it is dry now. More rain coming in a couple of days so will need to get those buckets under those areas. At least I can empty those after a rain.

Hows it going??

Sad news that I forgot to post on a few threads. My great grandpa passed away a last week. The funeral was good.... We had a good Christmas too.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Isaiah. How old was he? It's very special to have had a great grandpa in your life. I never did because by the time my parents adopted me, they were almost 40 years old and of course, their parents were up in years themselves.

Thanks!! He was 93 so he lived a good long life!!

Sorry for your loss, holm.

Speckled, good thing you can use buckets to keep the coop from flooding. Several have lost chicks, and chickens in areas that have been experiencing harsh weather conditions.

The rain held off yesterday, misty today on and off. I am a bit upset today. After losing my goofy, sweet little Lucy yesterday, her aunt Carly is off. She doesn't seem to be eating so we gave her special food yesterday and today, but today, she ate very little of it. I really feel the wet conditions have a lot to do with that. The coops are fine, except the bantam coop, which had a couple of leaks, not actual drips, but seeping into the coop in places, roof and bottom of the wall on one end. DH re-roofed it with metal so I think that is solved. A window had some mold on the trim inside, not sure where it was coming from and two corners, same side, under the shavings were damp. We caulked all around that end of that 4x8. We've never had issues with anything other coops we've built so not sure why this one has been problematic. And mold just on the ground outside from all the wet as well is contributing. I turned over the pens with a pitchfork myself yesterday since DH said the tiller needs an oil change. I don't need an oil change, but I may need a muscle relaxer.

So, I think the mold issue may be to blame for Lucy and Carly. Carly is so super tiny, even for a D'Anver. You have to really see her to appreciate how small she is. Seramas have nothing on this gal so I think it's why that may have affected her much more than the others, who seem fine.

AND, to top it off, this morning when we went to let everyone out, I found my Dottie, my very favorite Stukel hen, on the roost, panting and closing her eyes like she was in pain. I dropped my poop rake, grabbed her off the roost, checked her over and separated her. This is an injury, I'm positive. Her back feathers show she has had most of Atlas's attention, noted that late yesterday, and she's been trying to go broody so probably was not cooperating with Mr. Insistent, hence, was hurt during a mating attempt. She has extra protein, vitamins and now, will get rest away from the Casanova. If anything happens to my Dottie, I don't know what I'll do. That girl is so much my own and my husband's favorite in that entire group, we just adore her, sweetest hen and a wonderful mama.

Cyn, last yr I lost a hen in the fall then another got sick. It was time for testing and that one had some form of ms/mg. She did not show any signs of resp. trouble just weakness and not eating. After it got dry I did not have any more get sick. also the next testing time was clean. I guess my isolation and removal of those hens did the trick for me. I did hate to lose one of pretty barred rocks though. They are such sweet hens and wonderful Moms.
