The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

When I went into the barn this morning, my husband met me at the door and said, "You're not going to believe this." Pooh was up at the front eating from the bowl, standing up (though, with her, it's hard to tell, LOL). She is still very weak, but I guess she was hungry from no food yesterday. I suppose this is going to be one of those up-and-down situations, but she was literally breathing open mouthed yesterday, almost gasping for air. She looked every bit the dying bird. And I could go out there in an hour and find her gone.

But, I have an unexpected issue. Rowena is bloated. She was laying just two weeks ago and I even commented to husband that her shells seemed much better. Then, she abruptly quit and began laying down way too often. She was laying under the roost today and I saw that her comb was listing over to the side slightly, so I picked her up and she is very bloated. This has to be a new infection or it's not an infection at all but some liver malfunction or something else because she was just laying. Because it seems new, we are giving her a 3-4 day penicillin round to see if we can fix her. She is the same age as Atlas and Wendy, just turned 3 yrs old in March-April.

Poor Hector if he loses yet another hen after Mary! I can't put Zara and Athena back permanently and I hate to move them since they seem to be doing okay where they are, plus at least one of them has a dwarf gene and I never want to take a chance of getting one of their eggs again. Hector may end up with some Brahma girls! I have Cora who is 15 weeks old, but the two BR pullets are only a month old so it will be a long time before they go in with Hector.

ETA: Oh, oh, oh, I do think that one confusing BR chick is a pullet! And I think it must belong to Dru or Wynette. The barring on the pullets in the Stukel pullets at that age was just like that, very crisp and almost cockerel-like. And the comb/wattles on it is not pink at all at over 4 weeks old, another blue besides how fast it feathered out. Could be wrong, but I think it's a Stukel chick.

Here is the chick in question. At just past 4 weeks old, there is zero pink in comb/wattles, plus dark leg fronts, plus feathering is far advanced of the two definite males. Tried to get her to hold still, but she was not having it. Going back to find pictures of Dru and the original Stukel pullets.

If it is a pullet, it will be a big beefy healthy one for sure, something you need these days with all the problems you have been having with your birds lately. My luck comes and goes in spurts too, mostly it goes, so I'm always thankful when I get a good streak going.

I do seem to be in a luck spiral, don't I? I'll be losing Carly, Pooh, maybe Rowena, though Ro is the only actual producer of eggs in there. Carly was laying recently, but after a hiatus of a full year, her teensy robin's eggs. I hope that's a BR pullet. That way, I'd have two for Hector, one to sell with a cockerel and only one odd man out cockerel.
I was looking at some photos of the Stukel pullets six years ago and they were nicely barred, less muddy than most of the others I've had, though those seem to "clean up" later on. I can't find the pics of them at that exact same age, though.

Carly, amazingly, is still alive. She acts, for lack of a better analogy, like she has cerebral palsy. But, she ate eggs this morning and drank water. Pooh is also alive, but lethargic. She had a better day yesterday, but today, back to sleeping a lot. And it's raining cats and dogs and has been all day long so no one was able to get outside except for Hector's group for a few minutes. Gave Ro her 2nd dose of penicillin.

Anyone have a suggestion for a series to binge watch, like a Starz or HBO series that's good? I am not a Game of Thrones type gal. We watched all five seasons of Southland and liked it a lot, am watching the White Princess right now. Tried watching The Wire, but the language was ridiculous and I got tired of it very quickly, plus I was so bored by the time we were half into the first episode. Might be hard to get one I'd like, though. We loved Falling Skies and Revolution and Definance, watched the first season of Fortitude (weirdest thing ever, not watching the 2nd season)

Sorry about Carly, and Pooh.

I got all the seasons of Bones, and Last Man Standing to binge watch. A great one is Mrs. Brown's Boys. If you can't find it, look on youtube. It's the funniest show!

I guess I'm thinking of more of something that won't be on regular television. I don't like comedies, generally, and I don't like British series. Never heard of Mrs. Brown's Boys, though.

Adding that I was a Bones fan. I read the books long before the series came out with the Temperance Brennan character. My husband watches Outlander. I was hoping to find something like a SHTF drama series like Revolution was. I cannot stand Game of Thrones, never watched through one episode. And never saw Downton Abbey-I thought it was "Downtown" Abbey for the longest time, but it was British so didn't watch it.
