The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

It's looking more and more like a pullet isn't it.

It is, but it's as large as the two males, though the actual body shape is more like MaryJo's and the black on the beak is just like both MaryJo and her sister. Maybe it's just a BIG girl with a slightly larger comb than the usual 9 week old pullet and superior barring. I swear, I go back and forth, but until I'm 100% sure, it stays!

Maybe it's both. I am enjoying the mystery, too bad we can't take bets.:)

Hahaha, that would be fun! So far, no crowing from "it", either, though the other two are doing that already. I'm not sure I've had a BR chick this age that I was not sure about, ever! Well, maybe Zane. I named him Zoe at first, then about 8 weeks old, realized it was not a Zoe. But, BRs are not usually this confusing.

I know you can't always go by crowing either. One of my two Mottled (Spangled) Orpingtons, Mabel, who usually lays a nice light-brown egg every day crows in the morning if I keep her cooped up in her pen. I've never seen or heard anything like it. lol

Cyn, I put some eggs under a very broody hen and they are now hatching. When I checked this am one egg had hatched, the chick was dead, and squashed very flat; looked like yolk matted with shavings around its abdomen. No signs of trauma, no wounds as if Mom had done it, it had not dried off or fluffed. I heard peeping from another egg, and also have eggs hatching in the incubator, which I was planning to give her once her own hatch. Would yo suggest I do that now? She does not seem aggressive at all.

Is she a brand new mom? I've had that happen on several occasions with newbies, where it was like they did not understand the new alien underneath them and clamped down. Neela did it, Dottie even did it her first time out as a broody. And my fabulous broody Buff Orp hen, Nugget, who raised quite a few broods over her 7 1/2 years, did that with her chick the last time. It was one chick only left that made it to hatch day and she crushed it, seeminly on purpose. It was like she had to sit because of her hormones, but she made a decision to kill the chick. She definitely knew better so it had to be on purpose. She died about a year later, if I recall.

You could get one of the fluffed out chicks from the incubator, slip it sort of under her wing like it hatched there, and show it to her, make sure she sees it and see what she does. If she seems aggressive toward it, then you'll have to brood them, I guess.

I like this SUV, though I won't buy it because it's not AWD/4WD, but they do come that way so anyone have any opinions about this brand? I love the interiors of them, more upscale than their price would indicate. This one is $11K. There is no Hyundai dealer around here, either, thought there is one an hour away in Dalton.

Hyundai and Kia are the same company. Actually Hyundai owns Kia. Both brands have car models that match except for cosmetic differences. It's kind of strange, but in Louisiana Hyundai is a popular brand.

We've owned Kias for years, and aside from one brand-new Sorento that gave us an early problem that was easily fixed, they have been very dependable vehicles. We currently have a 2011 Sedona that we bought brand new, and it is our second Sedona. Hyundai and Kia with both give you a lot of bang for your buck and are dependable. Periodically I've had to tighten bolts on seat handles, but other than that, no major complaints. Also, gas mileage is okay, but not fantastic, but dependability trumps all in my book.
