The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

The picture doesn't do him justice. He is a stunning rooster, and has the sweetest disposition. But, he really takes care of his girls and protects them above all else.

Sounds exactly like his daddy. Rex is a fabulous flock rooster, couldn't ask for better. They both get that from Rex's dad, Isaac, sweetest rooster ever. I'm happy he turned out to be so wonderful, Lisa.

Our newly acquired cat, Finn, was following me as I was following Atlas and his three around today as they free ranged behind the original garden. Once, Finn started to play stalk Dottie, who was completely oblivious to him, but Atlas wasn't. He saw Finn's position and got between Finn and Dottie and was getting closer and closer to the cat. Suddenly Finn tucked his paws under his chest and acted like he was just out for an afternoon chill session. Smart cat knows when to play dumb. Not sure what Atlas would have done if Finn had done a play charge, but he seemed to be ready to do something.

Many yrs ago I had a half wilder cat, Dusty. He was a hunter and brought up full grown rabbits occ. But I watched as he crept closer and closer to a hen. Just as he was about to pounce she stood on her tip toes and flapped her wings letting out a screech! That cat FLEW around the house and hid. Never again would he ever get anywhere close. It was so very funny. I guess he thought he was being attacked by a dinasaur.

This cat really tries his best to avoid the birds most of the time. Today was the first time I have seen him do that play-stalk thing with one of them. He usually gives them a wide berth (and they do him, too!) I've seen stray cats from time to time over the years and none have ever bothered the chickens. I wouldn't trust any cat around a tiny chick, but I don't think Finn would even bother the bantams. They are always penned up, though, so haven't tested that theory yet.

I was pleased to see Atlas doing the proper roosterly duty with the cat today. He's a good boy. Cat is, too.

You have a new cat

Yes, he adopted us on Nov 5. Saw Deacon following something out into the woods after the birds raised a ruckus and found this orange tabby. He turned around and came back when we called him and he's been here ever since, but now, he's neutered and has his shots and pest treatment. He's a really good cat, super personable. Shame on whoever dumped this boy! Here he is today sleeping in one of the beds I made for him. He stays outside 95% of the time, not wanting an indoor animal, but he gets to come in when it's cold in the mornings. He has a heated cat condo that DH made for him, so he isn't suffering.
