I recently had 2 teeth pulled. I had cavities under the fillings, and the fillings fell out. Due to my health issues, things deteriorated quickly. I would have normally gotten root canals, and crowns, but the oncologist said no. By dealing with it before it got too bad, I have the option of implants later on, if I want to. All my other teeth are in very good shape, for now, but the chemo has affected my salivary glands, so I tend to have a lot of dry mouth. Hopefully, things will get better after treatment, but there's no guarantee.

I agree that dental, and vision should be included in regular insurance too. Good luck at the dentist.

We both got the deep cleanings, not the regular ones (which would have cost us each a $10 co-pay, not $300 each). I had one of those same cleanings about 5 years ago, but never went for follow-up cleanings. I have a tooth that now just has the root tips. It had a root canal and had not gotten a crown so, before I could get back for this appt, the entire tooth broke. I need the root tips surgically extracted so have to find a different dentist to do that who takes my insurance. What fun. But, I will have a four piece bridge to replace the bridge that is behind that lost tooth, plus to cover that new dead space and anchored to a canine tooth. So, two crowns and two fake teeth in the middle is what it will be. Later will have to have another crown in a tooth that has a huge filling that won't last much longer. DH needs three crowns, just broken teeth, no decay. But we both have to go back in Oct just for part 2 of the deep cleaning thing. He hasn't been in 20 years, but his teeth are actually in good shape. I, on the other hand, have sucky genetics so have to do those deep cleaning things several times. And I'm the one who went to the dentist all my life, not him. Guess all that rotten egg smelling sulfur water in South GA kept his from going bad.

Every time I go to the dentist, two family members die. I'm serious! I got a deep scale cleaning in 2012 after not having cleanings for 11 years because I had no dental insurance, but never did the follow ups. One reason was money, the other was my FIL died, then my Uncle-in-law died two months later. Then, I went and had a tooth pulled, but did not get the cleaning because my father died and now, my BIL died. So, I was cracking them up in the office, telling them that every time I come to their office, two family members die and if I kick the bucket next, I will not be back for my appointment. So, after all is said and done, we will have about $5000 spent on our teeth, thankfully less than if we did not have our Humana C-550 dental plan that costs us $26. Me alone was only $16 but I added my husband to it this spring so he could get back to the dentist.

Yikes, not a fan of the dentist. I go once a year for a cleaning. I have been blessed with decent teeth thankfully. I feel your pain.

I'm very glad for you. When I was pregnant with my younger son, my teeth fell apart. I have so many fillings and one crown back then, plus one back tooth pulled. I still have the crown from then and he's 38 yrs old next month. The bridge was from when they were small boys, too.

I take good care of my teeth, but this is supposedly genetics. My husband should be the one with his mouth falling apart, not me! He brushes (and flosses, though erratically), but he never went to the dentist as a child. I went every 6 mos and took my boys, starting from when they were little. Both my inlaws had dentures, my BIL had dentures and my SIL was going to have to get them, but saved up for implants instead. Smoking not only affects heart and lungs, but skin and teeth, too, it's very apparent. Neither of us smokes, never have. The chain smokers are the ones who lost all their teeth.

Since I have osteopenia from having to take synthoid all these years, makes me wonder if that has something to do with any bone loss in my jaw, around the teeth and such. Surely, tooth strength would be affected by that.

ETA: oh by the way, a lady who bought a trio of Brahmas from me also wants the Barred Rock pair!

I think teeth is mainly genetics, though I think stuff like toothpaste, and in general dental care has improved dramatically over the years. I think care when your younger factors in too, and seems to affect teeth long term. Both my parents don't have their original teeth, but all us kids still do.

That's exciting new about some of the kids finally finding a new home. One more thing you don't need to worry about.

I'm glad about the kids, too. Now, to see which male she chooses!

I changed a few years ago to non-fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a poison that affects the thyroid so I quit using it and avoid mouthwashes with it as well. It's weird to see skull and crossbones on a box of fluoride, but yup.

Nice. I'm glad I don't live in town where they add fluoride to the water. I never understood forcing fluoride on people.

I agree and I'm glad I've been drinking well water for over 15 years now. We have good tasting water, not much iron or other nasty stuff, just have a sediment filter on it to save the water heater and fixtures. It isn't hard water, doesn't stain faucets and such. Working on storing it for hard times. Electric goes out, well pump goes out.

Our well water stinks, literally, it's full of iron. We run it through a bunch of filters, and a softener, and reverse osmosis for drinking. You are lucky.

Ugh I both love and hate the dentist. I love having my teeth all clean (and a few hours break from the kids lol) but I also have bad teeth. I've had so many fillings. I need crowns on my front 4 top teeth but my insurance won't cover it because they consider it "cosmetic " despite the fact that those teeth are basically all fillings now and need crowns before they fall apart. So I've been putting that off until it becomes absolutely necessary. I almost always have cavities, though the last few times I've had no cavities, just a few spots to keep an eye on, but I had to get one crown for a tooth with an old filling that was cracking the tooth. Our insurance only covers $1500/year per person, which I use up every year.

Yay for the pair finding a home!
