The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Tom came back in from locking the barn with a story about Hector, Jr. and Drew. He said he heard unsettled chirping from the three 12 weeks olds' pen and went over to quiet them. Hector's son was fussing and Tom went in, picked him up, got the usual protest, but petted him and he started to relax so he put him on the roost. Mini-Hector sat down, Tom was stroking his back and began to walk away, but then, the kid started to make noise again. Drew, the Atlas son, stood up, reached down and thunked him on the head, LOL. Mini-Tyrant then bowed his head, Drew thunked him once more for good measure and sat down. It was like he was telling him to shut the heck up, we're trying to sleep here, jerk! LOL.
This is why I like the Atlas son. He is very easygoing and never starts a fuss, always stays close to MaryJo, but when they spar, he raises up to his full height and backs Hector's son down, quickly, too. And I can pick him up and rub his neck and wattles and he really loves the attention, completely opposite to the other guy. (and there is a 50/50 chance he does not have a dwarf gene)

Way to go Drew!

Of course, if Drew stayed here, he'd get a better name, more in line with the Atlas crowd, but I have no place for him. I really like him a lot, as I've said more than once. But, to me, temperament trumps almost everything else.

My husband is literally watching my son's plane flying back to Seoul, Korea. There is a program called flightradar24 where you can put in the flight number and watch the plane as it goes on its route, along with all the planes in the world and see what they are. It's the coolest thing. Chris has to stop in Istanbul for 3 hours, not a place I like him to be for obvious reasons, but I wasn't cool with him living a few miles from the North Korean border with the angry little man posturing all the time, either. But, he'll be in Ireland, starting the end of August, for a year to complete his masters program. After that, I don't know. He may decide he loves Ireland and wants to stay.

Oh, hysterical ad for a mean rooster to get a new home on the FB swap group, bad words blanked out, of course (interesting that the program DID NOT change the bad words and I had to do it myself, @sumi! @Nifty-Chicken is that supposed to happen?)

FREE to good home. Silver pencil wyondette rooster you can have my silver pencil hen too as an incentive

♀️ Well, any home really. At this point I don't give a shit what kind of home this inconsiderate jerk goes to: A@#$$% ROOSTER. He's the perfect rooster if your alarm is broken and you need to be awake at 5:30 a.m. That is his only setting, 5:30. He has no snooze button but will be quiet just long enough for you to fall back to sleep and then he'll start back up with his obnoxious cock-a-doodle-doing right outside of your windows. It's like he knows where you sleep and can zone in on that particular window so maybe he has some sort of special x-ray vision where he can see sleeping people behind walls. He is also a perfect rooster if you want to start running... around your yard... while you're trying to get away from him. He no longer goes after me as he is also an instructor of interpretive dance. Or at least that's what I imagine it looked like as I went after him flapping my arms, jumping up and down, kicking at him, yelling and screaming, and swinging a mop in his direction. So, if you're looking for an alarm clock with the only setting being 5:30 a.m., a personal trainer and a dance instructor, I have the perfect rooster that is able to fill all 3 of those positions FOR FREE! But you're coming out to catch this a@#$$, I want to see your first interpretive dance lesson.

Well, let's not speak too poorly of Hector. I like him. I know e started off on the wrong foot, but he's turned out to be a pretty good boy, considering. He's got character! He's actually very good looking too.

Put him over the Stukel hens with the sweetest personalities. That should help bring out the better temperament, while preserving the better size, shape, and barring. You may have to put the resulting offspring back over the Stukel line, once again, to fully integrate the temperament, but in the long run, it should be worth it.

The problem is that those belong to Atlas and I can't take Atlas's girls from him. Ida has a crop tumor and I don't want her hurt. Wynette and Druscilla are the sweetest pure Stukels, but they are both 6 years old and rarely lay. I think I've lost my window with them, unfortunately. I know Zara or Athena have a dwarf gene, maybe both. I don't know about Tessa or Lizzie, but they are both Atlas's daughters. . I could give Hector one or both of them, maybe Lizzie after she raises her chicks and has already been gone from Atlas for awhile. MaryJo could be an Atlas daughter, too, and frankly, I think she is Druscilla's. The pure Stukels are the best to put with Hector, but they are just too old. All other younger hens belong to Atlas out of one of them. I think Tessa belongs to Ida, but I never knew who Lizzie's mother was.

Dh has a good friend that's a pilot, and he flies all over the world. He sends messages telling Dh when, and where he's headed, then Dh uses that program to track his friend.

Loved reading the ad. There are quite a few roosters in this area, and yes they tend to start crowing around 5:30 am. I have a rooster in the bachelor pad, and it's his job to answer each, and every other rooster he hears, and his hearing is quite good. Fortunately, the coop is close enough we can hear him, but far enough away that he doesn't really disturb anyone.

A guy at the bottom of the mountain we live on has pens of birds, mostly RIRs and sex links from the looks of them. They start at 4 a.m., others across the road from them start and mine start at the same time. Some girl in the barn was making unsettled noises at 3:45 a.m. when I got up to take some pain meds for my mouth-heard it on the baby monitor. Everyone is okay this morning, though.

Thea will be on Day 12 tomorrow with her 5 Brahma eggs.

As far as Hector, he can be an irritation, but not a true problem most of the time. Until and unless I have a better replacement, he will probably stay. By then, of course, I'll be so attached to that goober that I won't be able to let him go.
