This is unusual for this time of year, plus, this is not the coldest night, either. I think two nights after this one are supposed to be colder by several degrees. I guess the birds will be in the barn for several days. if they were all younger, I'd let someone try the outside if it got into the 30's, but with the older hens affected by the open barn door, I can't leave it open for someone to go outside.

...WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 11 AM

a line from Summerville to Jasper to Cleveland.

Working on this 20" block for a center medallion for a quilt using historic prints.

9, member: 368006"]Our wind chills are -25 to -35, any aren't fun. How are you chickens handling the cooler weather @speckledhen ? These are the days I wish I could provide extra heat, but it isn't practical for us.[/QUOTE]

They are okay so far. I'm just hoping the power doesn't go out. I'm about to go out and pack hay around Snow and Amanda, maybe even put them in the same side of the cage (we remove food and water bowls at night because they tend to get in the water, not good in this temp). Everyone should be fine with hay and I"ll just muck it out at the end of this bad cold spell and put it in the garden/compost pile.

I find that the heat lamps don't bump up our electric bill much at all. The oil fired heater in the bathroom is what does that. If we don't use it, we see very little change in the power bill.
