The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

When it would get really cold a few years ago, one of the "smart-alec" sales guys where I worked would ask everyone to get an aerosol can and go outside and spray.

(Of course he was making his point....)

Warmer here today, high of 7, after a cold night we are supposed to get snow and temps back up into the more normal 20s for this time of year. Whew. And Little Mrs. Ungrateful can go back out to the coop, and stop Bagawking! in my garage.

Talk about problem chickens, Miss Wendy, Atlas's sister, bloodied up poor Athena badly and made my nests look like Kara's with her bleeding Leghorn hen. She is brutal to anyone who wants to be in a nest. I put Wendy in with Atlas and she was on the roost and no one in there wanted to go near her, certainly not Atlas. So, she's back with her previous group, but dang it, she better shape up or I'll put her with big Bash! She's a hefty hen, that Wendy, so she can handle him, but that's a last resort. If I thrown her in with Hector, she will find herself being pummeled to a pulp by him. He doesn't like her at all, but then, he doesn't like anyone except hens he's already had in his pen.

Aw, poor Athena, hope she’s doing ok. Naughty Wendy!

We’ve had rain today, which means as the temps get freezing tonight we’re going to get icy roads, glad we won’t have anywhere to go tomorrow but just down the road to church. My hens are itching to get out, but I don’t want them getting wet and freezing.

Isn't the temperature fluctuation crazy!!!!!

I just hope it doesn't plunge 30 degrees again overnight. Kind-of makes acclimation hard.

Yes, it does. And it's so hard on the older birds. Snow and Amanda can't even see the sun from their cages. I am afraid they're becoming depressed, but I know they're warmer up there than they would be on the floor. The others roost at night and they can't. This is pneumonia weather for elderly birds if they are the least bit under the weather. So far, June seems okay. I've made her spend the nights in the hospital cage just to make sure she stays warmer, but put her back in the pen during the daytime. Maybe they can go outside today if the winds are quiet. That's the main issue, the wind. It's deceptively sunny, but that wind is biting.
