The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

The county has charged him numerous times for illegal dog breeding operations, cruelty, etc. but they don't seem to be able to stop him for some reason. This is why I say that animal control is of almost no use in rural counties like ours. We have to take matters into our own hands. He didn't see the attack, but found the tracks and it was one of those big dogs. Me, I loathe Akitas, always have. And badly bred ones are just awful dogs. I would be moving if that lowlife moved in next to me. You practically have to have them pose for a picture while slaughtering your birds to get anything done. I love dogs, but I wouldn't hesitate to blow every one of those away if it crossed my property line. He's talking about getting a hotwire rigged up now, but he's lost all those beautiful, sweet BRs he bought from me and I won't sell him more as long as that jerkwad lives next to him.

This is what our cousin wrote about this guy tonight on the group:

He says he's seen about 50 of those dogs there in the kennels. That's insane if he cannot be a breeder.
I can find you the name of an Akita rescue that might want to do something about it.

There has been another Akita breeder involved trying to get him stopped, but no one seems to be able to do a thing. He's been sued multiple times for deceptive practices and all sort of things related to his Akita operation. I think the county threw up its hands and just quit. A rescue won't be able to take his dogs legally. He began hoarding birds and they were in deplorable conditions (thank God I found out who I had agreed to sell my BR pair to and backed out, but in the end, my BRs were killed anyway). Our cousin is putting up high strength fencing and running hotwires before he gets more birds.

Folks have generously offered him birds and I think he's arranged to get some after his fencing is up. I did not have any available pullets, even if I was going to do so. I want to make sure he has his property secured. Ideally, the neighbor will give up on living there and go somewhere else. His lawyer boyfriend bought the half million dollar property for him and maybe he'll get him something over the line and make it North Carolina's problem.

If his dogs are not being properly taken care of, they can get them removed. If he's taking care of them, they can't. Normally they fine a person if there is a witness to the dog escaping it's property. lf it kills livestock, or pets on your property, you have the right to shoot the dog, or call animal control. Again, someone has to witness it. Animal control will usually fine the person, and have them replace the killed animal(s). The fines can go up with each incident, and there is a limit, then they can come take the offending dog. I know they have more options with Pit Bulls, and Chow Chows. I'm not sure about Akita's though. In Florida, anyone owning Pit Bulls, and Chow Chows are required to pay extra homeowners insurance per dog. Again, I'm not sure about Akitas, but you can ask. If the owners are suppose to, but didn't pay the extra coverage through their homeowner's insurance, the insurance company can demand the extra money, or the removal of the dogs.

I know the part about about the homeowner's insurance, because I paid extra for my Chow Chows, per dog every year. Remember, I had the crazy neighbor that called Animal Control on me at least once a week. Animal Control called, and verified I had insured my dogs. What's so funny, I paid a lower rate on my dogs, because it was Animal Control that certified them as non-threatening, when I adopted our youngest child.

Not sure how we'd know who his homeowner's insurance is through. I know he's been fined more than once, but he gets his rich boyfriend to pay it. Apparently, the moron used to work for the CDC, if you can believe it, but he is one of those who thinks he's entitled to some special status and he pulls some "oh, poor me" card every time something happens, like he's being targeted. He's really a loathesome, self-absorbed person. Seen many in my day, but he takes the cake.

There are a few dogs I really strongly dislike. Akitas are one I really loathe, pitbulls are one that I'm not really fond of unless they're mixed with something else. I've never liked Basenjis. I'm don't like the looks of Rotties, don't care for the heavy bodies and big heads. And, sorry, Cheryl, I really dislike Chows. A friend's daughter was attacked by the neighbor's Chows when she cut across the bottom corner of their front yard walking home from school. They chomped on her leg and drug her across the yard, badly scarring her. My son's friend in HS had one that was always trying to bite him, did nip him once. I've never seen a smart Chow in my entire life and I have always hated their looks. The Chinese bred them for food. You don't want smart food, LOL. There are others I don't like, such as Afghan hounds, ick. But, as with chickens, there is a breed of dog for every person, right? And, of course, any dog that is inbred is dangerous, no matter what the breed or size.

Here is the list of the ten dumbest dogs, though it may change in rank every few years. Chows and Afghans are always on there. I see Pekinese, another breed I don't like, but then, I don't like that type of coat or face. My MIL had one and the coat always seemed oily. I don't like Shih Tzus or Llasa Apsos or Poodles, so it's not always an intelligence thing.
I looked another ranking and Akitas are about 54 on the list, so not too bright, overall.
  1. Basset Hound
  2. Mastiff
  3. Beagle
  4. Pekingese
  5. Bloodhound
  6. Borzoi
  7. Chow Chow
  8. Bulldog
  9. Basenji
  10. Afghan Hound

Also found this assessment. Interesting. Afghans are always the dumbest on the planet, LOL.

Strange, my basset hounds were always wickedly smart, they just don't look it. Kinda like Columbo. That's probably why he had a basset. :)

I find any breed can be a problem if the owner doesn't know dogs or isn't responsible. They don't have insurance for stupid dog owners, so they try to ban the breeds that those people like to own. When I groomed dogs the biggest biters was whatever was popular because people who don't understand dogs get what popular as opposed to the breed that is right for them.

I was not convinced that the Basset belonged way down on the list that far, but I've never had one. I like their looks, so funny, especially as puppies. Cocker Spaniels are notorious biters because so many are badly bred. I don't care for those, either-another dog who has an oily-feeling coat (at least, to me). I like big, smart dogs, but I do like dogs in general, just some more than others. I agree that stupid owners get the hardest-to-manage dogs and make it bad for the breed. Pits are especially disliked because some men get them to make up for some lack in the skivvies, if you ask me. For a long time, Rotties were the same. Yes, they can be really vicious, but so can a small dog; it's just that a pit can kill you and most small dogs can just damage you up to your kneecaps.

Pit bulls are seriously abused in this country too. Just for that I wish the breed was banned, but I guess it won't stop abuse or bad care. You will never find my dogs running loose. People who allow that don't actually care about the dog.

Akitas are scary, so are cocker spaniels. They are so messed up from the 80's and their run in popularity. Now the Australian shepherd is gaining in popularity which is very unfortunate. I like the breed and have 2, but they are strong willed dogs that need a strong willed owner.

It all makes me very sad, especially since I know the potential of dogs, and the relationship a human can share with them. I guess I see my dogs differently than many people. They are my life companions. I cannot imagine my life without dogs.
