The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

If I'd had the capacity, I'd have purchased them all and then listed them for sale online somewhere until they went to good homes.

But this is not the best time of year for newly hatched chicks with winter coming in soon...especially for new chicken owners. So it would have to be folks that already have good housing and know what they're doing.

No, it isn't for newbies, but thankfully, it's in Florida...no wait, you're not Cheryl! ACK! I saw "getaclue" for some reason, geez. Sorry! Surely TSC is doing it elsewhere, too. I have never liked TSC, the way they do chicks so I rarely go in there.

For rooster addicts everywhere, my latest quilt in progress using the surprise box of fabrics seminolewind sent to me. Part of the rooster panels were used, plus some of the fabric she sent and some I already had here. Should be at least 65" square after quilting (pre-quilting is 68"). And can you tell me why the roosters in the log cabin blocks around the center square are facing different directions, hmm? ;)

There are chicks at the tractor supply here too. It's too late in the season to be raising them here in my opinion. :idunno I won't buy from them. I learned that lesson.

Love the rooster quilt. :clap I have no clue why they are facing different directions. :hmm

Lisa, if you hadn't posted, I was going to come looking for you! Miss you around here. You must be busy. I hope that's all!

The roosters are all facing different directions because, well, roosters do what roosters want to do, not what you want them to do. And the roosters in this quilt are all goobers like Hector! It's a tribute to Hector and my late goober who preceded him, Deacon. Two smarter, sillier roosters I've never had in my life than Deacon and Hector. I've had smart ones, dignified ones, friendly ones, sweet ones, brave ones, valiant ones, etc, but those two are/were unique and so much alike in some ways, you'd think they were related.

They're sort of like my late Belgian D'Anver hen, Lucy, lovingly dubbed "Wrong Way Lucy". Every photo of them on the roost showed every bird facing one way and Lucy facing another. She went her own way was like that from a couple of weeks old until she died.

Chicks in Tractor Supply here too. A couple years ago I made a big fuss about them not having feed and the water being filled with shavings. I suggested they raise the waterer up out of the shavings to help keep them from kicking the shavings into the water. So much of what can be done to make things better for the chicks is common sense. Even if you're a kid who never took care of chicks before and nobody taught you what to do, for Pete's sake, use common sense and try to make things better for the little live things! Our store stopped having chicks for a couple of years because there were so many complaints (I asked why). But they are back and still not teaching the help how to take care of them. grrrr.

I went to a local TSC today and they had 3 bins of chicks - unusual for them at this time of year. Whoops...2 bins of chick and 2 of ducklings.

EVERY WATERER WAS BONE DRY. The duck food was empty. The chick food almost empty.

I asked someone to fill them and said I'd do it if they told me where the water is. The guy got some but didn't clean the waterers which had shavings in them and somewhat dirty.

I stayed and watched...
The 2 bins of chicks gathered around their water and drank - for more than 5 minutes. And after that, some of them were still drinking.

After that they were off to the food. Those ducklings were going to finish the feed within 10 minutes if I estimate correctly. Then what?

I'm chalking it up to weekend workers as I've never seen that in this or the other local TSC. But seriously, I think they probably would have stared dying if they hadn't gotten water within the half hour.
I refuse to buy from tsc unless it is an emergency and I would never buy their chicks or ducks.

Sorry for being so absent. I have been busy with chickens, bunnies, and gardens. Now I've set up my other knee replacement for October 12 contingent on my diabetes being well controlled, so I had to step up my exercise. I currently feel like a dog chasing my tail. I personally will be happy for winter and the lull it brings here. My husband is always go, go, go, with me tagging behind many days, or should I say gimping behind. :hmm

Now he brought me home a stray kitten last week, like I needed something else. :idunno Stinky kitten already has me waiting on her.
