Oh oh - this wicked weather is hard on the elderly. Hope he perks up.

And there is one more of Sammie Jo's eggs under my EE hen, Maretta, too, due March 12. So, we shall see what a 1/2 Delaware and a (what the heck is the percentage on Sammie if both of her parents were 1/2 Delaware??) another part Dellie will produce. I'm betting on a Delaware looking chick.

My sweet Isaac, I can't help but think he's living on borrowed time. He's outlived every other rooster here so far, Suede having passed on just about four months before he turned six years old. Last winter was so hard on him, losing his toe ends from his bad circulation. And a few summers before that, the fungal lung infection compromised his lung capacity permanently. All in all, he's one tough old bird.

I'm hanging, GJ, I'm hanging! I hope everyone else here does, too. Found Isaac under the coop at 4 pm. when all his hens were already on the roost. They rarely all go in without him. He wouldn't come to me, acted a little dazed. I wonder if he had a minor stroke and they all got spooked. He is 6 years old now, so you never know.

Yes, I finally got a poop rake and herded him out. He finally just "switched on", saw the open gate and trotted out and I had to catch up to him and scoop him up. I think he just may have had a small stroke, not uncommon at this age.

Today was an interesting day for our little bantam rooster as well. I was standing on the back porch and he was out in the yard milling around about 15' in front of me and out of nowhere a big ole red tail hawk swooped down to pick him up. Fortunately I was standing there on the phone with my husband and saw the whole thing so I threw the phone down and was able to start running towards Little Man and screaming and yelling at the hawk. She pulled up just in time not hit the roof of our porch. It was frightening! Needless to say after that there was no free ranging today.

We canceled our Dr's appointnents in Jasper, about an hour south of us, because we were expected this. Well, it's here.

We are also getting snow this am but at least it is warmer, 13 degrees (up from -22 yesterday morning ugh). How is Isaac?

Neither of us has been to the coops this morning but I heard him crow at least once over the baby monitor, I'm sure. Atlas has a big mouth and he'll crow over anyone, but I think Ike was crowing at the same time as he was. I heard Deacon and little Xander and the bantam roosters, too. DH hates cold so he'll have to pull up the courage to go do chicken chores this morning. I don't usually do them in this weather after my ankle break six years ago. Bad memories (((shudder))). Under the 3" we have so far today, there is mud- so treacherous.
