The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Well Cyn that is too bad. There are worse things than could happen to them than dying in their own home with their companions around them. Hopefully they are just winding down and not in pain, although pain is hard to evaluate in birds. I am sure you are keeping them as comfortable as possible.

Of course, they are as comfortable as I can make them, living normally with their respective groups. Nugget's group, Deacon's group and the
old ladies' group all got scrambled eggs today with yogurt, turmeric, cayenne pepper and garlic, not that it will cure anything, but I wanted to make sure they were eating enough protein and had the digestive aid and immune system boosters.

When I am old I am coming to live with you. I will even live with the chickens.

hehehe, even my sons won't do that. Of course, I did tell them both that if their dad kicked the bucket, there would never be another man living in this house with me, including either one of them.

ETA: During free range time for Atlas's group, I found Dottie on the deck eating Finn's cat food out of his bowl. He was laying watching her from a few feet away. And yesterday, he lost yet another collar somewhere. We went to town and he had it on. Less than two hours later when we got back, he was naked. It's on the grocery list for Monday, one reflective flea collar (plus a spare of some sort, considering he's lost two already).

O. M. GreatJumpingJiminyCricket! I have another broody in Atlas's coop besides Wynette, who I cannot seem to break. At two months past 4 years of age, Big Ida is clucking her head off for the first time in her life. Geez Louise, I can't do this right now. This is insane. She's the oldest I think I've had go broody so far as a first timer and I was (and am) determined I'd not let anyone hatch eggs for the foreseeable future.

Ahhhhh.................the power of Atlas. His hens just can't help themselves!! LOL!

Well, he does have me under his spell, anyway, LOL. I love that boy.

He worried me this morning, didn't crow when Isaac was crowing his head off, along with all my other roosters. I waited and waited and waited. Usually, Atlas's big mouth leads the chorus. I was dreading the thought that my bad luck this past year with younger birds was continuing and I would lose him for some unknown reason when he finally decided to wake up. And he did come out of the pop door first so I guess he's okay.

Wow, I bet that did concern you! Atlas has to live a long, happy and healthy life and sire many sons to carry on the tradition. Maybe he had a hard night with his adoring hens?

Yes, he needs to stick around. He's turned into the perfect flock leader. I can't breed Deacon, though he is a good boy-he obviously was permanently injured by Isaac awhile back, judging from what happened when he and Atlas had that last tussle at the inner door to his coop. He could drop dead on me at any time, plus he has that dwarf gene issue. And Isaac is positively elderly himself. If I lose Atlas, that's it. At this point in time, I'd go back to a complete hobby flock again. Shame, having all these superior quality hens, but, they aren't young themselves other than 11 week old Lizzie. Even Dru, who I consider a baby of the group, is over three years old herself since I hatched her from the original Rex over Dottie.
