The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Love the picture of Rocky with his head turned up, so cute.

For all his issues, he has such a great comb on him. He looked for Jet for a couple of days after he passed on; I guess he at least felt some connection with the other shortie.

Hey @Cetawin Check out this post from local site. Sound familiar???????

And my reply would be...

Quote: Just because they are a hunting breed doesn't give them permission to be on my private property and you put their lives into my hands if they are. Sheesh. No free passes for hunting dogs, sorry, buddy.

Either they happen in "fours" or my second three has begun. We just buried Rocky. He was fine, super cute, we were holding him and I decided to take him out in back to a grassy area to get some greens w/o anyone else to bother him. When we got to the spot, he began to struggle and as I lowered him down, he sort of stood on the palm of my hand and jumped off at about a 6" height. He sort of face planted, something not unusual for him since he's a low rider in front, then he began flopping around on the ground. I thought he'd jammed his leg, scooped him up and realized he was dying. He was gone within a minute. The only thing I can surmise is their deformed skeletal structure is so delicate in the neck area that he hit the ground just right, though it wasn't at all high and he'd done that plenty of times in his short 12 weeks of life.

So, both sons of Deacon and Sammie Jo are gone. What a crappy week. Gawd, this needs to end for awhile.

not poor Rocky. I was admiring his photo yesterday. You were right that dwarves do not live long - how sad.

I'm so sorry about all the losses. It has been a horrible week for you all.
I sure hope that's all. Cetawin wondered if he had a sudden seizure similar to Jet just as I was lowering him down and that's what happened, not that it had anything to do with his neck. It's possible. He's face planted plenty of times when jumping down from places. Hard to say. I know that neither brother was going to make it to a year and probably not to six months old. It's just hard.

Poor sweet Rocky. His limited days were all filled with love and he knew it.

Yes the running eagles sound way too familiar.

He was so special, both of them were. Can't have anymore of those here, though.

Atlas lost two more hens today, but not to anything tragic (though Atlas might think so). I gave Wendy and Rowena to Xander. They both laid eggs in there today and tonight, are on the roost shelf between Xander and big old crabby Dusty. So, I have removed the less than desirable breeders from Atlas's group and Xander has two much younger hens to take care of, if they will stay in the pen; so far, so good. Wendy did fly out once, but she was trying to get to a nest. When I took her back inside and showed her the nest I set up for them (Finn's never used litter box), where Ro had already deposited an egg, she settled down and added hers to it.

Gloria Jean is bloaty so she will probably pass away eventually and Atlas will have only the Stukel Rock hens until Lizzie is ready to go into that coop in about a month or so.

Oh my gosh! Rocky too???? Holy Cow, I honestly don't know what to say! No pet owner should have to endure the amount of death that you all have experienced lately. I am so very sorry.

I read on your Finn thread where he made it in safely last night during the coyote's deer hunt. Hopefully he is inside curled up next to your husband tonight. :)

Nope, he insisted on going out. He will not sleep inside. No dramas last night. I checked my game camera that points at the two largest coops and the fox and coyote did not go through that alleyway to get to the driveway so probably came from behind the house or at least, to one side of the view of the camera. I had just gotten brand new (expensive lithium) batteries in it and was hoping to see something, but nothing triggered it that night, dang it.
