I hope you'll post some calf pictures here when you have some!

Atlas's eye is still bothering him a little but it looks somewhat better. I hope he didn't poke himself too badly, but he got the Terramycin ointment in it a few times. I'm using it for Dusty, too, whose flopping comb (she ripped it half off and it hangs over her left eye, throwing dirt into it) is a problem for her. Her eye is always mattering due to the dirt/irritation so she is getting some of that as well. All the eye drops in the world dont help her for long. If that comb wasn't flopping into it, it wouldn't be doing that, poor old hen.

Atlas was doing his alarm yell in the coop before we let them out this morning. I didn't see anything and when I went to let him out about 20 minutes later, he refused to come out or let his hens out. I was cleaning around them and eventually, one by one, I was able to shoo them through the pop door into the pen. He must have seen something he really didn't like but no one else seemed upset or scared in the other coops.

Cleaning day for winter prep, seeing what works and what doesn't when the dust is gone.

I believe I have figured out what upset Atlas so much yesterday morning. This morning at 4 a.m., we were jolted out of bed by a pack of coyotes whooping it up, seemed to be right in our driveway, VERY close! If they weren't in the perimeter, they were just outside the driveway gate. I said, "FINN!" and DH ran out to see where he was. Finn had been inside his cozy heated condo because he felt very warm, but he was sitting outside on the edge of the table, listening to the party they were having, safe and sound. He didn't resist when DH brought him into the house, imagine that. That poor little Golden Comet hen on the property across from us must have been petrified! They sounded like they were right beside her coop, which is almost by the road that runs between our places. Her sister was already taken by a fox earlier this year and she is alone now, probably will be gone, too, soon.

I would guess that Atlas, who has the best vantage point from the coop's end window next to the main roost, would have seen a coyote loping across our pasture on the adjoining lot yesterday morning. I've never seen him so spooked.

speckled, unless there suddenly happened to be a severe shortage of yotes, I would have shot them. I'm not saying everyone should kill ALL wildlife, but for nuisance predatory animals that would harm me, my pets, and livestock, I have no qualms in shooting them. Sometimes they need thinning out.

I have no problem shooting those varmints but it was pitch black dark and they were between our place and the cabin across the road, not a great angle for safety. I found tracks on my adjoining lot as well as scat and I have moved my game camera to view that area because I'd like to get a handle on how many are in the pack. Sounded like at least four or five this morning, but hard to tell when they're caterwauling that way. My friend Ladyhawk tans hides and she said since she hung out a few of their pelts on her porch railing, they've given her house a wide berth. Maybe I should borrow one, LOL, or shoot my own!

This afternoon, I looked out the side door and saw my cat hightailing it up the trail from the area I later found the tracks and scat. He was obviously shaken though I didn't see anything after him. Will let you know what I get on the game cam in a couple of days.
