The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Glad you hear you are OK Misty.

Cyn, as long as their size is in the normal range, keep the ones you like the best. If you only select the largest, and not the ones you feel are best in all ways, eventually you will end up with a flock of Georgia Giant Barred Rocks

. Size is not the only thing. You have good instincts, so if there is a bird you like there is likely a good reason for it.

I was going back and forth on that one pullet. I just like her a lot. I like all of them, really, but there's just something about her. There are three pullets that are all pretty similar in size, shape and barring, then the small one, who seems to have the sharpest barring of all (what is is with the small bodied ones having the best barring? That's happened now a few times).

I was with the boys and gals Andrew will be getting this week. Watching them, I see that I could have chosen either one of two others and had a great cockerel. Even the smallest male is just a doll; I love that friendly little guy but I can't keep every cockerel, sadly. They are a great bunch of heathens, the Dirty Dozen. Thanks again, Mary.

Here are three of the four-see the pullet I mean at the bottom? She is lighter than the others and though she's not as large as the very dark one, I still think I may just keep her. Of course, I could change my mind on the day Andrew comes to get them, LOL.

Guess I'll have to name this guy so I don't keep saying "C'mere, buddy". They're having a great time torturing the Brahmas, who run to me for chest rubs as soon as I come into the pen. They know I'll save them from the Heathens.

Could have been Much worse, very easily. Power was back at about 25 hours. Everything you see here has been dragged to the burm pile or dragged near the wood pile to be limbed and cut for firewood. I was on the road, a mile away when this happened. I had to keep going, no place to stop without trees. Very thankful we are all ok.

Adonis, maybe too close to Atlas? Or Cupid - he is cute. Ajax - mighty Greek warrior. Or Hector, who fought against him at Troy. Loki the Norse Trickster.

If he was a duck you could call him Neptune

You know, Suede and my RIR/Buff Orp, Meg, had a son that Ladyhawk named Hector. Big, bright red rooster with blue in his tail and underfluff, about 12 lbs. He was snatched by what we believe to be a bobcat at the end of one day of free ranging, right off LH's porch. It was his job as the 2nd in command to bring up the rear so naturally, he was the most vulnerable, but no hens were taken that evening. So, I like the name Hector, but this boy would have BIG shoes to fill, I'm afraid. But, then, Atlas was named for a heroic son of Suede, too, who lost his life fighting a rottweiler with six other roosters. I'll think on that one. Would have to ask LH if she minded. Hector was very special to her. This was Hector:

Oh, my, bet that was LOUD! Glad it missed the house.

Well, thanks to Mary and in remembrance of Suede and Meg's much beloved red son, my young guy's name is now officially Hector! Ladyhawk said we need a Hector to take up the mantle in one of our flocks so she was enthusiastic about the idea. He truly has some very big spurs to fill! Okay, Hector, no pressure, right? No, there's definitely PRESSURE!
