The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

They look happy.

Here I am with my oldest hen, SS Freckles. Or Blackie. Or Speckled Hen, depending on who you talk to. She has avoided the Chicken Gods for 6 years.

Awesome picture, Mary! You know, I picked my screen name because I originally wanted guineas and Speckled Sussex. The guineas didn't work out that time and my SS didn't really, either. I had only Nelda and she died at around 4 years old with a bad crop for some reason. I wasn't as experienced with that stuff as I am now, maybe could have saved her, but as we all know, crops are not usually the main issue, but a symptom.

They definitely do look happy out there. Lots of room to run and exercise now.

They are running all over making a huge mess, but at least it's not in my house! I gave them a pan of dirt, too, when they all started cheeping. They weren't cold, they wanted attention.
It's up to 88* on that wall thermometer and the reptile bulb I'm using as a back up to the larger one has heated up the cinder block under it so all they have to do is get inside there and they'd be toasty. Lots of choices for warm spots, but unless they're napping, they're definitely not under one today! We're going into the upper 40's tonight after a very warm day, so it will take quite some time for the coop to cool down and by then, it will be morning with rising temps again.

I have to get my military ID on Tuesday, 2 hours from here in Marietta. The closer one had no openings and mine is expiring May 5. Seems it would make more sense to make it easier on retirees' dependents to renew their ID cards.

Here are my littles, first batch that is, from Sand Hill

Looks just like my brooder. Chicks all over the world have one thing in common, MESS!

Hi all its been awhile! lil update; i have 6 hens now, all have chicks with them. 22 in total! not to mention my breeding quads of wyandotte bantams, my partridge variety have 3 chicks with them and my blacks have 7.

oh and i have around 40~ ducklings running around with their mommas. gonna have to regime them soon lol

You have chicks coming out your ears!

Already, we have a new Little Tyrant. Every time I go into the little coop and put my hand down, one of the BR males runs up and bites my fingers. Yeah, that's definitely a Hector child-smart, brave and in-your-face. And they are not quite a week old yet. The genes will out! LOL

Hey, don't pick on Hector! He's not even my rooster, but he won me over a long time ago. He, and his young hormonal self. He turned out fine, and he's handsome too.

Hahaha, I'll tell him that his buddy, Cheryl, loves him! He's a good boy, but he did present a challenge when he was younger.
